Reserve teams in Norwegian football

Reserve teams in Norwegian association football play in the ordinary league system. They are always attached to their first teams with a "2" suffix, must play in a lower league than the first team, and cannot play in the Premier League or First Division. Furthermore, if a club's first team plays in the First Division, the reserves team cannot play in the Second Division either.

Controversy

Reserve teams have in general been criticized for fielding uneven teams from week to week, with many first-team players one week and more youth players the next. They have also been criticized for keeping smaller clubs out of the Second Division, meaning a more centralized football culture. In 2009 manager Ivar Morten Normark proposed to throw the reserve teams out of the ordinary league pyramid, and other managers like Dag Eilev Fagermo agreed. In a survey, 19 of 31 responding Second Division clubs wanted the reserve teams out, as did 30 of the 49 responding Third Division clubs.

Strømmen IF

Strømmen Idrettsforening is a Norwegian sports club from Strømmen. It has sections for football, athletics, and formerly had sections for speed skating among others.

History

The club was founded on 25 September 1911 as Strømmen FK. The name was changed to FK Norrøna in 1914. In 1923 the club merged with Strømmen IL and took the name IL Norrøna. In 1935 it incorporated the club Strømmen BK, founded in the 1920s, and reverted its name back to Strømmen FK. On 27 June 1945, the club merged with AIF club Strømmen AIL, founded 1928, and got its current name.

Football

The club reached the Norwegian Football Cup semi-final in 1957, and played in the Norwegian Premier League from 1949 to 1955 and from 1956 to 1961, as well as in 1986 and 1988. The club hosts the record for lowest attendance in the highest league, 202. They play their matches at Strømmen Stadion.

In 2006, Strømmen won their Third Division group. In the qualification match for the Second Division they met Ullern. Strømmen won the first leg, 6–2, on home ground, and they lost the second leg, 4–2, but won 8–6 on aggregate, and achieved their promotion for the 2007 season. Strømmen got relegated in 2007, but retained their spot since Odd Grenland 2 got demoted to the Third Division, following Odd's first team being relegated from the Premier League. Thomas Berntsen was hired by Strømmen on 3 August 2008, and with Berntsen as head coach, Strømmen avoided relegation to the Third Division. Ahead of the 2009 season, Petter Myhre was named co-coach together with Berntsen. With Berntsen and Myhre as coaches, Strømmen won their 2009 Norwegian Second Division group and was promoted to Adeccoligaen. In 2010 Strømmen finished three points behind the play-off promotion. In the decisive match of the 2011 season, Strømmen avoided relegation with a 6–1 win against Nybergsund. After the 2011 season, Berntsen was replaced by Erland Johnsen.

Strømmen

Strømmen is a town in Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway. It is about twenty kilometers east of Oslo, and considered part of Greater Oslo. It has around 12,000 residents.

The town has its origins from floating lumber and sawmills along Sagelva. Later there has been heavy industry at Strømmen, including the railway stock manufacturer Strømmens Værksted. It currently hosts one of Norway's largest shopping centre, Strømmen Storsenter. Strømmen had a top-level women's football team, Team Strømmen until 2009, while Strømmen IF will play in second top-level from the 2010 season.
