Indie is a shortform of "independence" or "independent"; it may refer to:

Independent music

Independent music (often shortened to indie music or indie) is music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The term indie is sometimes also used to describe a genre (such as indie rock and indie pop); as a genre term, "indie" may include music that is not independently produced, and most independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and usually create music that can be categorized into other genres.

Independent record labels

Independent labels have a long history of promoting developments in popular music, stretching back to the post-war period in the United States, with labels such as Sun Records, King Records, Stax, etc.

In the United Kingdom during the 1950s and 1960s, the major record companies had so much power that independent labels struggled to become established. Several British producers and artists launched independent labels as outlets for their work and artists they liked, but the majority failed as commercial ventures or were swallowed up by the majors.

Hipster (contemporary subculture)

The hipster subculture is composed of affluent or middle class young who reside primarily in gentrifying neighborhoods. It is broadly associated with indie and alternative music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility (including vintage and thrift store-bought clothes), generally progressive political views, organic and artisanal foods, and alternative lifestyles. The subculture typically consists of white millennials living in urban areas. It has been described as a "mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior".

The term in its current usage first appeared in the 1990s and became particularly prominent in the 2010s, being derived from the term used to describe earlier movements in the 1940s. Members of the subculture typically do not self-identify as hipsters, and the word hipster is often used as a pejorative to describe someone who is pretentious, overly trendy or effete. Some analysts contend that the notion of the contemporary hipster is actually a myth created by marketing.

"Don't Leave Home" was the third single released in the UK from Dido's second album, Life for Rent. It was officially released on 12 April 2004. Even though it didn't go further than number 25 on the UK Singles Chart, it stayed in the charts for nine weeks. The song was however a radio hit, peaking at #1 on the official airplay chart in early 2004.

Background

"Don't Leave Home" deals with drug addiction. It is written and sung from the unusual point of view of the drug singing to the person who is addicted to it. It was originally a demo recorded for her 1999 album No Angel that was instead included on the 2003 album, Life for Rent. It was written and produced by Dido Armstrong and her brother Rollo Armstrong. The song is set in common time composed in a moderate tempo of 80 beats per minute, written in F♯ Major with a vocal range from the tone of F♯₄ to the note of C♯₆. The B-side, "Stoned", is a song which tells the story of an unwinding relationship, clouded through drugs, as the title suggests. "Stoned" was remixed by Deep Dish as "Stoned (Deep Dish Remix)". This version peaked at number-one on the Hot Dance Club Songs.

Stoning

Stoning, or lapidation, is a method of capital punishment whereby a group throws stones at a person until he or she dies. No individual among the group can be identified as the one who kills the subject. This is in contrast to the case of a judicial executioner. Slower than other forms of execution, stoning within the context of Modernism or contemporary Western Culture, is considered a form of execution by torture.

Stoning is called Rajm (Arabic: رجم) in Islamic literature, and is a practice found in the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Northern Nigeria, Aceh in Indonesia, Brunei, and parts of Pakistan. In some countries, such as Afghanistan and Iraq, stoning has been declared illegal by the government, but is practiced extrajudicially. In several others, people have been sentenced to death by stoning, but the sentence has not been carried out. In modern times, allegations of stoning are politically sensitive; the government of Iran, for example, describes allegations of stoning as political propaganda.
