Stewart Copeland

Stewart Armstrong Copeland (born July 16, 1952) is an American musician, multi-instrumentalist and composer best known as the drummer for the English rock band The Police and for his film music soundtracks. He has also written various pieces of music for ballet, opera and orchestra. According to MusicRadar, Copeland’s "distinctive drum sound and uniqueness of style has made him one of the most popular drummers to ever get behind a drumset". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Police in 2003 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2005.

Early Life

Stewart Armstrong Copeland was born in Alexandria, Virginia on July 16, 1952, the youngest of four children of CIA officer Miles Copeland, Jr. and Scottish archaeologist Lorraine Adie. The family moved to Cairo, Egypt, a few months after his birth, and Copeland spent his formative years in the Middle East. In 1957, the family moved to Beirut, Lebanon, and Copeland attended the American Community School there. He started taking drum lessons at age twelve and was playing drums for school dances within a year. Later he moved to England and attended Millfield from 1967 to 1969. Copeland went to college in California, attending United States International University and UC Berkeley. Returning to England, he worked as road manager for the progressive rock band Curved Air's 1974 reunion tour, and then as drummer for the band during 1975 and 1976.

Famous quotes by Stewart Copeland:

"But darkness makes me fumble For a key to a door Wide open"
"And the general opinion is we are much better on stage than in the studio."
"So I suppose that means we can actually play the instruments."
"Andy lives just around the corner. We actually see quite a bit of each other, more, socially, than we ever did in the group, ... And whenever Sting is through town, or whenever I'm passing through Wiltshire, where he is, we hook up and we have a lot of laughs."
"I'm the one member of the group who is the biggest fan of the group."
"Music has an immediate effect. If you want to go beyond that and look underneath, film is a good way of explaining."
"People are disappointed when they hear my American accent because they regard 'The Police' as an English band but I've clung to my American-ness all the way."
"Don't believe everything you see on VH1."
"I've got Arabic music in my blood."
"In a film score, the last thing you want to do is take people out of the movie. The music is secondary. In opera, the music is the main event."
"I'd rather duplicate it myself. Another of our favourite techniques."
"The great opera composers were so good at their job, that the whole genre came to be built around the concept of the composer's vision."
"Making music has gotten easier; selling it has gotten harder. Making music has been democratized, but the market is in the hands of fascists."

Old School

by: Stewart Copeland

When I was young I was a fool
I was somebody else's tool
I was at the mercy of my so-called friends
You never saw a joke like me
I was as dumb as I could be
If I could go back to my school
I'd show 'em how I broke the rules
I'd show 'em all my wordly cool
One day I fell out of the pack
I felt like Yasser Arafat
It was a close shave but I skipped that trap
And now I've done some growing up
I ain't the same old buttercup
If I could go back to my school
I'd show 'em all my worldly cool
I never dared to take a chance
I never asked a girl to dance
And all my dreams were out of reach
And when the girls came out to play
I never had a thing to say
And all my dreams were out of reach
I never thought to disobey
Not like I always do today
If I could go back to my school
