Stephen Jackson

Stephen Jesse Jackson (born April 5, 1978) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Jackson won an NBA championship in 2003 as a member of the San Antonio Spurs.

Early life

Jackson was born in Houston and spent his childhood in Port Arthur, Texas. Growing up, Jackson was raised by his mother, Judyette, a single parent who worked two jobs. As a teenager, Jackson worked in his grandfather's soul food restaurant in Port Arthur, where he would wash dishes and bus tables. At the age of 16, Jackson's half-brother Donald Buckner died at 25 years old as a result of a beating. Following the violent tragedy, Jackson said that he wished he could have been there to assist and protect a member of his family. "You can't tell me seeing his brother die that way hasn't had an effect," recalls Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh. "To me, it's why he is always coming to the help of his teammates."

Jackson led Lincoln High School to a state championship in his junior year before transferring to Oak Hill Academy (Virginia), where he earned All-America honors in 1996. He was the leading scorer in the 1996 McDonald's All-American game, on a team that included Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal and Tim Thomas. Following a commitment to join the University of Arizona, Jackson was ruled academically ineligible. He attended Butler County Community College of El Dorado, Kansas for one semester but did not play basketball there.

Stephen Jackson (born January 26, 1970) is a musician from Washington D.C. Most notably he is a founding member, singer and songwriter for the Washington D.C. based band The Pietasters and the record labels Slug Tone! and Indication Records.

Musical career

While attending college at Virginia Tech, Stephen Jackson and high school friends Tal Bayer, Chris Watt and Tom Goodin formed the ska, punk-rock band the Slugs in 1990. After changing the name to the Dancehall Crashers and eventually the Pietasters, the band soon began playing shows with bands like The Skunks, Bad Manners and Bim Skala Bim. The Pietasters soon began recording their first musical tracks, and released early EP's and a full-length self-titled tape on their own SlugTone! label in 1990 and 1991.

Jackson began touring extensively with the Pietasters in 1992 after graduating with a degree in Architecture, and has continued to do so to the present day. He has released seven full-length albums with the Pietasters.

Stephen Philip Jackson, FRS, FMedSci, (born 17 July 1962) is the Frederick James Quick Professor of Biology and a Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge. He is a Senior Group Leader and Head of Cancer Research UK Laboratories at the Gurdon Institute, and an Associate Faculty member at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He is also part-time Chief Scientific Officer for MISSION Therapeutics Ltd.

Education

Professor Jackson was educated at the University of Leeds, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry in 1983. He then carried out his PhD research working with Jean Beggs on yeast RNA splicing at Imperial College London and Edinburgh University, earning his PhD in 1987.

Research

Following his PhD, Jackson carried out postdoctoral research with Robert Tjian at the University of California, Berkeley, where he developed an interest in the regulation of transcription. He returned to the UK in 1991 as a Junior Group Leader at the then Wellcome-CRC Institute, now the Gurdon Institute.

Stephen Jackson (canoeist)

Stephen Jackson (born 18 September 1956) is a British sprint canoer who competed in the early to mid-1980s. He won two medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with a gold (K-2 10000 m: 1983) and a bronze (K-4 10000 m: 1981).

Jackson also finished eighth in the K-1 1000 m event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
