Stephen Barrett

Stephen Joel Barrett (/ˈbærɪt/; born 1933) is an American retired psychiatrist, author, co-founder of the National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF), and the webmaster of Quackwatch. He runs a number of websites dealing with quackery and health fraud. He focuses on consumer protection, medical ethics, and scientific skepticism.

Biography

Barrett is a 1957 graduate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his psychiatry residency in 1961. In 1967 and 1968 he followed part of a correspondence course in American Law and Procedure at La Salle Extension University (Chicago). He was a practicing physician until retiring from active practice in 1993. His medical license is now listed as "Active-Retired" in good standing: "No disciplinary actions were found for this license." A longtime resident of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Barrett now resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

In addition to webmastering his websites, Barrett was a co-founder, vice-president and a board member of the National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF). He is a scientific advisor to the American Council on Science and Health, and a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI). From 1987 through 1989, he taught health education at Pennsylvania State University.

Stephen Barrett (diplomat)

Sir Stephen Jeremy Barrett KCMG (born 4 December 1931) is a British retired diplomat who was ambassador to Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Career

Barrett was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He joined the Foreign Office (later the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, FCO) in 1955 and served in Cyprus, Berlin, Helsinki, Prague and Ankara. He was briefly Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary in 1975. He was head of the British Interests Section at the Swedish Embassy in Tehran in 1981, Assistant Under-Secretary at the FCO 1981–84, Ambassador to Czechoslovakia 1985–88 and Ambassador to Poland 1988–91.

Barrett was appointed CMG in the New Year Honours of 1982 and knighted KCMG in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 1991.

Stephen Barrett (Irish politician)

Stephen Declan Barrett (26 December 1913 – 8 September 1976) was an Irish Fine Gael politician, barrister and judge. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork Borough constituency at the 1954 by-election caused by the death of Thomas F. O'Higgins of Fine Gael. He was re-elected at each subsequent general election until he retired from politics at the 1969 general election. He later became a Circuit Court judge. He was the father-in-law of Edward M. Walsh, the former president of the University of Limerick.

Stephen Barrett (1718–1801) was a British classics teacher, who published some translations of Latin texts.

Life

Barrett was born in 1718 at Bent, in the parish of Kildwick in Craven, Yorkshire. He was educated at the grammar school, Skipton, and at University College, Oxford and graduated with a MA in 1744.

Barrett entered the ministry, he became master of the free grammar school at Ashford, Kent, and was made rector of the parishes of Purton and Ickleford, Hertfordshire. In 1773, he resigned his mastership on receiving the living of Hothfield, Kent.

He continued to hold the living until his death, which occurred at Northiam, Sussex, on 26 November 1801.

Works

In 1746 Barrett published a Latin translation, which was admired at the time, of Pope's Pastorals.

Among his friends in early life were Dr. Johnson, and the founder of the Gentleman's Magazine, Edward Cave. To that magazine Barrett was a frequent contributor. Vol. xxiv. contains a letter, signed with his name, on a new method of modelling the tenses of Latin verbs.
