Missouri Route 14

Route 14 is a state highway traveling through the southern part of the U.S. state of Missouri. Its western terminus is at U.S. Route 60 (US 60) in Marionville, and its eastern terminus is at US 63 on the northern edge of West Plains. Route 14 is a two-lane highway for its entire length.

Formerly this road's western terminus was at US 71 in Joplin, and its eastern terminus was at US 67 southwest of Poplar Bluff. These sections are now US 160, Route 174, and Interstate 44 (I-44). The section between Mount Vernon and the southeast corner of Douglas County was Route 40 from 1922 to 1926.

Route description

Route 14 begins at the northern boundary of West Plains at an intersection with US 63. It will be 52 miles (84 km) before Route 14 enters another town. The highway passes through the hilly country of the Ozarks, and shortly after it starts, it enters the Mark Twain National Forest and forms a short 4.8 miles (7.7 km) concurrency with Route 181 from the twin bridges west. Twenty-eight miles (45 km) west of US 63, Route 14 intersects Route 95. Twenty-three miles (37 km) west of the intersection with Route 95 is Ava and an intersection with Route 76 and Route 5. West of Ava, the highway winds its way west to Sparta, where it joins with Route 125 for two miles (3 km).

Alabama State Route 14

State Route 14 in Alabama, also known as SR-14, is a public highway maintained by the state of Alabama. SR-14 runs from west to east through the central portion of the state. The highway begins at the Mississippi state line at the terminus of Mississippi Highway 69 and connects the cities of Selma and Prattville before ending at State Route 147 on the western side of Auburn.

History

State Route 14 was one of the original routes in the Alabama's first statewide highway system in the 1920s. The original routing followed much of the same path as today, but was significantly shorter. The highway as built then started in Selma and ran east along its current route to Auburn. As was standard for highways of the era, SR-14 was unpaved for its full length. The first paved section was constructed in 1932 between Elmore and Wetumpka. Paving continued sporadically for the next 15 years, with the last gravel section on the route being paved in 1947.

In 1956–57, the state renumbered many highways, and as a result other state highways to the northwest of Selma were renumbered as SR-14, extending the highway to the Mississippi state line along its modern course. In the 1960s, when the first segment of Interstate 85 was constructed, bypassing Auburn and Opelika, SR-14 was extended from its eastern end at U.S. Highway 29 in Auburn along US-29 through Opelika to the northern end of that first Interstate Highway segment, at the current Exit 64. When U.S. Highway 280 was re-routed to meet Interstate 85 between Auburn and Opelika in 1998, SR-14 was truncated to a new eastern endpoint at US-280 in Opelika. In 2009, it was further truncated to its present terminus at the junction with State Route 147.

California State Route 14

State Route 14 (SR 14) is a north–south state highway in the U.S. state of California, largely in the Mojave Desert. The southern portion of the highway is signed as the Antelope Valley Freeway. The route connects Interstate 5, or Golden State Freeway, on the border of the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Granada Hills and Sylmar and with U.S. Route 395 near Inyokern. Legislatively, the route extends south of I-5 to State Route 1 in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, however the portion south of the junction with I-5 has not been constructed. The southern part of the constructed route is a busy commuter freeway serving and connecting the communities of Santa Clarita, Palmdale and Lancaster with the rest of the Greater Los Angeles area. The northern portion, from Vincent (south of Palmdale) to Route 395, is legislatively named the Aerospace Highway, as the highway serves Edwards Air Force Base, once one of the primary landing strips for NASA's Space Shuttle. This section is rural, following the line between the hot Mojave desert and the forming Sierra Nevada mountain range. Most of Route 14 is loosely paralleled by a main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad, used for the Antelope Valley Line of the Metrolink commuter rail system as well as a connection between Los Angeles and the Central Valley via Tehachapi Pass.

Virginia State Route 14

State Route 14 (SR 14) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs 71.10 miles (114.42 km) from U.S. Route 360 (US 360) in St. Stephens Church east to a cul-de-sac in Bayside. SR 14 is the primary highway of King and Queen and Mathews counties and the main east–west highway of Gloucester County; the highway connects the namesake county seats of all three counties.

Route description

SR 14 begins at an intersection with US 360 (Richmond–Tappahannock Highway) in St. Stephens Church. The roadway continues on the north side of the intersection as SR 721 (Newtown Road), the old route of SR 14 that continues northwest to near Bowling Green. SR 14 heads southeast as The Trail, a curvaceous highway with multiple right-angle turns that serves as the primary north–south highway of King and Queen County. The state highway passes through the hamlets of Bruington, Henleys Fork, Stevensville, Cumnor on its way to the county seat of King and Queen Court House, which contains the county offices and the county's only high school. SR 14 continues southeast through the small communities of Truhart, Little Plymouth, Shanghai, and Elsom to its junction with SR 33 (Lewis Puller Memorial Highway) in Shacklefords.

New York State Route 14

New York State Route 14 (NY 14) is a state highway located in western New York in the United States. Along with NY 19, it is one of two routes to transect the state in a north–south fashion between the Pennsylvania border and Lake Ontario. The southern terminus is at the state line in the Chemung County town of Ashland, where it continues south as Pennsylvania Route 14 (PA 14). Its northern terminus is at a cul-de-sac on Greig Street in the Wayne County village of Sodus Point. NY 14 has direct connections with every major east–west highway in western New York, including Interstate 86 (I-86) and NY 17, U.S. Route 20 (US 20) and NY 5, and the New York State Thruway (I-90). It passes through two cities—Elmira and Geneva—and serves many villages as it traverses the state.

NY 14 was assigned in 1924 to an alignment extending from Elmira to Sodus Point via Watkins Glen, Penn Yan, and Geneva. It was extended south to Pennsylvania by 1926 and realigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to follow its modern routing alongside Seneca Lake between Watkins Glen and Geneva. Its former routing via Penn Yan became NY 14A, NY 14's lone suffixed route. While the general routing of NY 14 has not changed since 1930, it has been realigned several times within the Elmira area. When it was first assigned, it used several different city streets, including Broadway, Main Street in Elmira, Lake Street, and Main Street in Horseheads. It was gradually reconfigured into its current routing over the years, with the last change coming c. 2004 when the route was shifted onto most of the Clemens Center Parkway.

Rhode Island Route 14

Route 14 is a numbered state highway in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It runs approximately 23 miles (37 km) from Connecticut routes 14 and 14A at the border with Sterling, CT to Route 6 in Providence.

Route description

Route 14 starts at the Connecticut border at an intersection with Connecticut routes 14 and 14A. It runs northeast past the northern terminus of Route 117, and then turns north at an intersection with Rhode Island Route 102. It runs concurrent with Route 102 for a while, and crosses two arms of the Scituate Reservoir on causeways. Route 14 continues east and intersects I-295 at exit 4, then continues towards downtown Providence before ending at the US 6 expressway near the Huntington Expressway.

History

Route 14 roughly runs along the historic Providence and Norwich Turnpike, later renamed to "Plainfield Pike". The only section of Route 14 that does not roughly follow the original road is in Scituate, where approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of original road have been bypassed. Half of the bypassed road is currently submerged under the Scituate Reservoir. The bypassed section, a road called "Old Plainfield Pike" can be driven by car from its beginning at Route 102 to Route 12. The original road continues past Route 12 as a paved path. This paved path continues for approximately .25 miles up to the Scituate Reservoir, at which point the path is underwater for approximately a mile. It resurfaces out of the Reservoir on the northeast side and continues for another .25 miles and then rejoins with Route 14. The pavement between Route 12 and the Reservoir, and between the Reservoir and Route 14 on the northeast side, is believed to be original from before the Reservoir was created.

State highways in Washington

The State Highways of Washington in the U.S. state of Washington comprise a network of over 7,000 miles (11,270 km) of state highways, including all Interstate and U.S. Highways that pass through the state, maintained by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The system spans 8.5% of the state's public road mileage, but carries over half of the traffic. All other public roads in the state are either inside incorporated places (cities or towns) or are maintained by the county.

System description

All state highways are designated by the Washington State Legislature and codified in the Revised Code of Washington (RCW). These routes are defined generally by termini and points along the route; WSDOT may otherwise choose the details, and may bypass the designated points as long as the road serves the general vicinity. WSDOT's duties include "locating, designing, constructing, improving, repairing, operating, and maintaining" these state highways, including bridges and other related structures. Within cities and towns, the local governments are responsible for certain aspects of the streets maintained as parts of a state highway, including their grade and the portion not used for highway purposes. All routes, even Interstate and U.S. Highways, are defined as "state route number" plus the number; for instance, Interstate 5 is "state route number 5" and U.S. Route 395 is "state route number 395". Also included in the RCW are "state route number 20 north" (signed as State Route 20 Spur) and "state route number 97-alternate" (signed as U.S. Route 97 Alternate). Some other spurs, such as State Route 503 Spur, are defined as part of the main routes, as is U.S. Route 101 Alternate. WSDOT has also defined some spurs that mainly serve to provide full access between intersecting routes.
