Cherokee

The Cherokee (/ˈtʃɛrəkiː/; Cherokee Ani-Yuⁿwiya (ᎠᏂᏴᏫᏯ) are a Native American tribe indigenous to the Southeastern United States (principally Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina). They speak Cherokee, an Iroquoian language. In the 19th century, historians and ethnographers recorded their oral tradition that told of the tribe having migrated south in ancient times from the Great Lakes region, where other Iroquoian-speaking peoples were.

By the 19th century, European settlers in the United States called the Cherokee one of the "Five Civilized Tribes", because they had adopted numerous cultural and technological practices of the European American settlers. The Cherokee were one of the first, if not the first, major non-European ethnic group to become U.S. citizens. Article 8 in the 1817 treaty with the Cherokee stated Cherokees may wish to become citizens of the United States. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Cherokee Nation has more than 314,000 members, the largest of the 566 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. In addition, numerous groups claiming Cherokee lineage, some of which are state-recognized, have members who are among those 819,000-plus people claiming Cherokee ancestry on the US census.

Cherokee (rocket)

The Cherokee was an experimental rocket built by the Cook Electric Co. for use by the United States Air Force during the 1950s for the testing of ejection seats.

History

Made from aluminum, Cherokee was a blocky, simple design that was designed for air-launch from a B-29 bomber. It was operated as part of Project Whoosh, an effort to determine if the use of ejection seats at supersonic speeds was feasible.

Launched from the B-29 mothership at an altitude of 6 miles (9.7 km), it would fire a solid-fueled rocket to accelerate to supersonic speed, at which point the ejection seat, containing an anesthetized chimpanzee as a test subject, would be fired. The first test took place on January 26, 1954, at Edwards Air Force Base; another test in June was held before the project moved to Holloman Air Force Base, with two further tests being carried out in July 1955 and April 1956. None of the four chimpanzees used in the tests survived due to difficulties with the ejection system, however the project was considered a partial success.

Staré

Staré is a village and municipality in Michalovce District in the Kosice Region of eastern Slovakia.

History

In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1221.

Geography

The village lies at an altitude of 107 metres and covers an area of 6.234 km². The municipality has a population of about 700 people. The name was taken from grof Staray.

Star (Erasure song)

"Star" is a song by Erasure, released in 1990 as the fourth European (and third American) single from the group's fourth studio album Wild!.

A straightforward dance music track with disco elements, "Star" was written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, its lyrical content clearly referencing nuclear war; Erasure's own form of protest song. When released as a single, the track was remixed slightly for radio, bringing acoustic guitar elements and various background vocal parts forward in the mix.

The last single released from Wild!, "Star" became Erasure's twelfth consecutive Top 20 hit on the UK singles chart, peaking at number eleven, and in Germany it peaked at number twenty-three. In the United States, "Star" did not enter the Billboard Hot 100, although it became a popular club hit, climbing to number four on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
