St Mary's School, Colchester

St. Mary’s School is an independent day school for girls in Colchester, Essex, England. St Mary's is a member of the Girls' Schools Association.

History

Originally based at St. Mary’s Terrace East on Lexden Road, the school moved to its current Victorian premises in Lexden Road in 1923, into a house known as Glen Mervyn. It purchased the neighbouring castle-style property called The Turrets in 1974.

Owing to the school’s ongoing success and continued growth, it bought another large Victorian residence three miles from the Senior School, Comrie House, which opened as the Lower School in 1982. This is located in the village of Stanway, on the western edge of Colchester.

Curriculum

St. Mary’s School is an independent day school for girls in Colchester, Essex. The Lower School, based at Comrie House on London Road, accepts pupils aged 4 to 11 while the Senior School on Lexden Road welcomes pupils from 11 to 16. In January 2011 a kindergarten opened at the site of the Lower School, and is named St. Mary's Kindergarten.

Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford is a particular church of the Latin Rite in Hartford, Litchfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. The archdiocese includes about 700,000 Catholics, more than 500 priests, 216 parishes and almost 300 deacons. This is roughly one-half the population of the three counties. It also publishes The Catholic Transcript.

History

The present territory of the archdiocese of Hartford was originally part of the Diocese of Boston until Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick of Boston expressed concern that there should be separate dioceses for Connecticut and Rhode Island in keeping with the growing Catholic population in those states.

On November 28, 1843, the Diocese of Hartford was established by Pope Gregory XVI with Reverend Willam Tyler as its first bishop. At the time of its creation, there were 10,000 Catholics in the area. Bishop Tyler was able to petition successfully to move the See of Hartford to Providence, Rhode Island, in order to be nearer to the majority of the Catholics. Having served for 5 years, Bishop Tyler died in 1849. The second bishop, Reverend Bernard O'Reilly, spent his time securing priests for the still young diocese all the while helping to curb the anti-Catholic movements of the time propagated by the Know Nothing Party. In January 1856, O'Reilly was lost at sea on board the ship Pacific. It wasn't until two years later that the third bishop of the diocese was installed, the Reverend Francis Patrick McFarland, known as the "Civil War Bishop." It was during his time that the Diocese of Providence was created in 1872. Despite ill health, McFarland was able to participate in the First Vatican Council (1869-1870).

St. Mary's School (Wilmington, Delaware)

St. Mary's School is a historic Roman Catholic school building at 502 Pine Street in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It was built in 1866 to serve children of parishioners of the adjacent St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. It housed a parochial school until 1979, after which it was occupied by the Elementary Workshop Montessori School. It is a three story, five bay by four bay, brick structure with a low hipped roof in the Italianate style. It features a wooden box cornice around the entire roof line.

It added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

St Mary's Church, Luton

St Mary's, Luton, is an Anglican Church in the centre of the town of Luton, England. The church has a rich and long history, being over 850 years old and has been rebuilt and refurbished constantly over the centuries. The Church is one of the largest in Bedfordshire and considered a fine example of medieval architecture. The Church is part of the St Albans Diocese.

History

Original church

The site of St Mary's has been the centre of worship for people in the area for over 1,000 years, and a church was built in about 930 AD by King Athelstan as an act of thanksgiving for victory over the Danes. The land here was owned by the king in Saxon and early Norman times and the church was very richly endowed.

12th century

The current site of the church itself was built by Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester in 1121 and consecrated in 1137. The original structure of the church was a cruciform without aisles, but with the increases in population, the north and south aisles were added within 40 years of each other around the start of the 13th century.

St. Mary's station in St. Marys, Ontario, Canada is a station for Via Rail trains running from Toronto west to Sarnia. The town of St. Marys is served by 4 passenger trains daily. Eastbound train VIA 84 stops at 0757, and eastbound train VIA 88 stops at 2036. Westbound train VIA 85 stops at 1336 and westbound train VIA 87 stops at 20:23. Reservations are required 40 minutes in advance of trains 84 & 87 for those trains to stop at the station.

The International Limited was operated jointly by Via Rail and Amtrak between Chicago and Toronto. The service, which had started in 1982, was discontinued in 2004.
