St. Norbert College

Saint Norbert College (SNC) is a private Catholic liberal arts college in De Pere, Wisconsin. Founded in October 1898 by Abbot Bernard Pennings, a Norbertine priest and educator, the school was named after Saint Norbert of Xanten. In 1952, the college became coeducational. The school currently enrolls about 2,160 students.

History

St. Norbert College was established when Abbot Bernard Pennings, a Dutch immigrant priest from the Premonstratensian Berne Abbey of Heeswijk, the Netherlands, founded the college to train young men for the priesthood. Frances I. Van Dyke, a seminarian, was the first and, at the time, the only student. St. Norbert is the first and only institution of higher learning in the world sponsored by the Premonstratensian order. Abbot Pennings later started a commerce program at the college for lay students before retiring in 1955.

St. Norbert's second president, the Rev. Dennis Burke, O.Praem., expanded the college, anticipating the student population would eventually reach 2,000. Robert Christin, who became president in 1968, implemented the current course system and the academic divisional structure. In 1973, Neil Webb, a former faculty member and vice president, became president. With his strong fiscal management abilities, Webb established the first substantial permanent endowment for the school.

St Norbert College (SNC) is a private Catholic secondary school in Queens Park, Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1965 by Fr Peter O’Reilly O Praem, Fr John Reynolds O Praem, Norbertine priests and educators, the school was named after Saint Norbert of Xanten. In 1976, the college became coeducational and now enrolls about 900 students.

History

In 1959, Fr John Reynolds O Praem and Fr Stephen Cooney O Praem travelled to Western Australia from Kilnacrott in Ireland. The original intention was to establish a boys’ boarding school in York. This didn’t eventuate but the Norbertines have maintained a presence in the York parish until the present date.

In 1964, Archbishop Prendiville invited the Norbertine Canons to establish a boys’ school in Queens Park. St Norbert College was officially blessed by the Rt. Rev. F C Colwell O Praem, Abbot of Kilnacrott, on 7 February 1965. In that year, less than thirty students were enrolled in one Year 6 class.

The College expanded by one class each year until 1971 when the first students entered for the Leaving Certificate examinations. By this time, enrolments in Lower Secondary necessitated double streaming of classes. The College only enrolled boys until 1976, when girls were enrolled in Year 8. The College eventually eliminated lower grades, enrolling Year 8 through 12, with the neighbouring St Joseph's Primary School enrolling Year 1 through 7.

St. Norbert is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

Historical riding

The original riding of St. Norbert was established at the time of the province's creation in 1870. For the 1870 provincial election, it was divided into two separate ridings: St. Norbert North and St. Norbert South. Subsequently, it was reduced to a single riding.

St. Norbert was a francophone-majority riding. It was eliminated in 1879, at a time when francophone representation in the province was being reduced.

Current riding

It was created by redistribution in 1979, and has officially existed since the provincial election of 1981. The riding is located in the southernmost tip of the City of Winnipeg.

St. Norbert is bordered to the east by Seine River, to the south and west by the rural riding of Morris, and to the north by Riel, Fort Garry and Fort Whyte. The riding's character is suburban.

St. Norbert, Winnipeg

St. Norbert is a bilingual (French and English) neighbourhood in the southernmost part of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. While outside the Perimeter Highway, (the beltway that surrounds most of Winnipeg), it is still part of the city. The population is just over 5,000. Each summer, the community is home to the St. Norbert Farmers' Market, drawing large crowds from Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Other attractions include the St. Norbert Provincial Heritage Park, and the St. Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre. St. Norbert is the closest community to the Red River Floodway gates.

St. Norbert is also the name of a much bigger city ward in Winnipeg, which includes much of the Fort Garry South neighbourhood cluster and a small part of St. Vital. It is represented by a member of Winnipeg City Council.

History

The original inhabitants of what is now St. Norbert were First Nations peoples, including the Assiniboine, the Cree and the Ojibwa, who were drawn to this region because of its hunting and fishing opportunities. The community bordered on two rivers - the Red and LaSalle - and a bison trail ran from the south bank of the La Salle River to bison hunting grounds nearly 50 kilometres away.
