St Ann's is a neighbourhood in England, in the south of the London Borough of Haringey to the east of Harringay and West Green. It is located within, but is distinct from. St Ann's ward.

Location

St Ann's extends from Chestnuts Park in the west to Seven Sisters Road in the east. To the south its boundary is defined by the London Overground railway line.

History

St. Ann's Church was built in a rural setting in the middle of the nineteenth century and consecrated in 1861. A hamlet soon began to grow up around the church. However, it was quickly swallowed up by the northward march of London. By the mid-1890s it could no longer be distinguished as a separate hamlet.

Saint Anne

Saint Anne (also known as Ann or Anna or Anne, from Hebrew Channah חַנָּה, meaning "favor" or "grace") of David's house and line, was the mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ, according to Christian and Islamic tradition. Mary's mother is not named in the canonical gospels, nor in the Qur'an. Anne's name and that of her husband Joachim come only from New Testament apocrypha, of which the Protoevangelium of James (written perhaps around 150) seems to be the earliest that mentions them.

Church tradition

The story bears a similarity to that of the birth of Samuel, whose mother Hannah had also been childless. Although Anne receives little attention in the Western church prior to the late 12th century, dedications to Anne in the Eastern church occur as early as the 6th century. In the Eastern Orthodox Churches and Eastern Catholic Churches, she is revered as Hannah. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Hannah is ascribed the title Forbear of God, and both the Birth of Mary and the Dedication of Mary to the Temple are celebrated as two of the Twelve Great Feasts. The Dormition of Hannah is also a minor feast in the Eastern Church. In Protestant tradition it is held that Martin Luther chose to enter religious life as a Roman Catholic Augustinian monk after crying out to St. Anne.

St Ann Without

St Ann Without is a civil parish in the Lewes District of East Sussex, England. It covers an area to the west of the town of Lewes, including Long Hill.

The parish was formed in 1894 as Lewes St Ann Without from the part of the ancient parish of Lewes St Ann outside (that is, 'without', as opposed to 'within') the borough of Lewes. Ashcombe House dates to the 18th century.

Governance

On a local level, St Ann Without is governed as a Parish meeting.

The next level of government is the district council. The parish of St Ann Without lies within the Kingston ward of Lewes District Council, which returns a single seat to the council. The election on 4 May 2007 elected a Liberal Democrat

East Sussex County Council is the next tier of government, for which St Ann Without is within the Newhaven and Ouse Valley West division, with responsibility for Education, Libraries, Social Services, Civil Registration, Trading Standards and Transport. Elections for the County Council are held every four years. The Liberal Democrat David Rogers OBE was elected in the 2005 election.

St. Ann (electoral district)

St. Ann (also known as St. Anne) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1892 to 1968.

It was created as "St. Anne" riding from parts of Montreal Centre in 1892. It consisted initially of the Centre, West and St. Anne's wards in the city of Montreal. In 1914, the riding's name was changed to "St. Ann", and it was redefined to consist of, in of the city of Montreal, the Centre, West and St. Ann's wards and the part of St. Gabriel ward south of the Grand Trunk Railway tracks; and the parish and town of Verdun (transferred from the county of Jacques-Cartier.

The electoral district was abolished in 1966 when it was redistributed into Lasalle, Saint-Henri and Saint-Jacques ridings.
