Sport (US magazine)

SPORT magazine was an American sports magazine. Launched in September 1946 by the New York-based publisher, Macfadden Publications, SPORT pioneered the generous use of color photography – it carried eight full color plates in its first edition.

SPORT predated the launch of Sports Illustrated by eight years, and is remembered for bringing several editorial innovations to the genre, as well as creating, in 1955, the SPORT Magazine Award. The SPORT Award, given initially to the outstanding player in baseball’s World Series (Johnny Podres of the Brooklyn Dodgers was the inaugural winner), was later expanded to include the pre-eminent post-season performer in the other three major North American team sports. What made SPORT the most distinctive from Sports Illustrated, however, was the fact it was a monthly magazine as opposed to SI's weekly distribution.

SPORT was published continually between its launch and August 2000, when its then-owner, British publisher EMAP PLC, made the decision to close the money-losing title. Today, the photo archive of SPORT, which represents one of the most significant collections of 20th century sports photography in North America, is housed in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, at The SPORT Gallery.

Sport (Turkmen TV channel)

Turkmenistan Sport (Turkmen: Türkmenistan Sport) is a Turkmenian sport TV channel of State Committee of Turkmenistan on TV, Radio and Film. Was aired on January 1, 2012 under the title "Sport". Broadcast in the Turkmen language. The channel broadcasts all sports - football, hockey, basketball, figure skating, boxing, swimming, volleyball, and other sports.

History

In early December 2011 at a government meeting, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree "for the widespread adoption of the country's principles of a healthy lifestyle, multiply thrust of youth to the sport, the conclusion of Turkmen sport at the international level" the creation of Turkmenistan channel Sport.

Convenience TV is designed to promote the principles of a healthy way of life, to promote the development of mass sports movement and sport. Broadcast is ad-free.

The channel is broadcast their own championships Turkmenistan with professional journalists and commentators. In the summer of 2012, first broadcast all the matches of EURO 2012 and the 2012 Olympic Games, daily, live, in the Turkmen language.

Vaasan Sport

Sport, known by its full name as Hockey Team Vaasan Sport OY, is a Finnish ice hockey team playing in Liiga, and is based at Vaasa Arena (capacity 4448) in Vaasa. The team was established in 1939 as IF Sport (Idrottsföreningen Sport).

History

Vaasan Sport was founded in 1939 as IF Sport. The team was involved in the founding of the Finnish top division Liiga, formerly known as SM-Liiga, in 1975, but was relegated only one year later after the 1975-1976 season (roster for their first and only SM-Liiga season).

After the relegation Sport played in the Finnish 1st Division (since then renamed to Mestis), until they were relegated in 1991-1992 to the Finnish Second Division. Climbing back up to the 1st division proved to be a tough task and wasn't accomplished until spring 1997, with the game-winning goal of the deciding game against Kiekko-67 being scored by Kari Teräväinen in overtime.

The 2008-09 season was a success as Sport won the Mestis championship. However, in the league qualification series the team lost the last game to Ässät in a best-of-7 format, thus remaining in Mestis. The overall qualification series were close as Sport at one point was a single goal away from beating Ässät in overtime and being promoted to Liiga, but was unable to score.

Perry

Perry is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented pears, similar to the way cider is made from apples. It has been common for centuries in England, particularly in the Three Counties (Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire); it is also made in parts of South Wales and France, especially Normandy and Anjou.

In more recent years, commercial perry has also been referred to as "pear cider", but some organisations (such as CAMRA) do not accept this as a name for the traditional drink. The National Association of Cider Makers, on the other hand, disagrees, insisting that the terms perry and pear cider are interchangeable. An over twenty-fold increase of sales of industrially manufactured "pear cider" produced from often imported concentrate makes the matter especially contentious.

As with cider apples, special pear cultivars are used to make Perry. Perry pears are thought to be descended from wild hybrids, known as wildings, between the cultivated pear Pyrus communis subsp. communis, brought to northern Europe by the Romans, and the now-rare wild pear Pyrus communis subsp. pyraster. Perry pears are higher in tannin and acid than eating or cooking pears, and are generally smaller.

Perry (Surrey cricketer)

Perry (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who played for Surrey during the 1750s. He was possibly related to the player called Perry who, in 1726, took part with Piper of Hampton in the earliest known single wicket contest.

Career

The first mention of Perry is when he played for Surrey against Kent at Dartford Brent on Friday, 6 July 1750. Subsequently, he played in a single wicket match at the Artillery Ground on Monday, 10 September 1745, for Tom Faulkner's Five against Stephen Dingate's Five.

He then played for All-England against Kent in the two matches at the Artillery Ground in May 1751. On Monday, 3 June 1751, Perry played in a "fives" match for Kent against Surrey. He must have been adept at single wicket as he was involved in further contests in 1754 and 1755.

The only other mention of him was in 1752 when he was a given man playing for Westminster against Addington.

As Perry had established his reputation by 1750, he must have been active for some years previously. His career probably spanned the 1740s and 1750s when very few players were mentioned by name in contemporary reports.

Perry, Georgia

Perry is a city and county seat of Houston County in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of the Warner Robins, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 9,600 at the 2000 census. /ˈhaʊstən/. The city is in the Macon metropolitan area.

History

Founded in 1823 as Wattsville, the town was located near the center of Houston County and served as its courthouse. The name was soon changed to honor Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town on December 9, 1824. The original city limit was a circle, one mile in diameter, except where bounded on the north by Big Indian Creek.

Perry is perhaps best known as the location of the annual Georgia National Fair.

Ante-bellum industry in Perry included gristmills, sawmills, and cotton gins. The Houston Home Journal (now the Houston Times-Journal) began publishing in 1870. Robins Air Force Base in nearby Warner Robins has been a significant employer since World War II. Other manufacturers in the city have included Frito-Lay, Perdue Farms (formally Heileman Brewing Co.), and Cemex, Inc. (formally Penn-Dixie Cement and Medusa Cement Company).
