Spoonful

"Spoonful" is a blues song written by Willie Dixon and first recorded in 1960 by Howlin' Wolf. Called "a stark and haunting work", it is one of Dixon's best known and most interpreted songs. Etta James had a pop and R&B record chart hit with "Spoonful" in 1961, and it was popularized in the late 1960s by the British rock group Cream.

Background and lyrics

Dixon's "Spoonful" is loosely based on "A Spoonful Blues", a song recorded in 1929 by Charley Patton (Paramount 12869), which is related to "All I Want Is a Spoonful" by Papa Charlie Jackson (1925) and "Cocaine Blues" by Luke Jordan (1927). The lyrics relate men's sometimes violent search to satisfy their cravings, with "a spoonful" used mostly as a metaphor for pleasures, which have been interpreted as sex, love, or drugs.

Composition and recording

"Spoonful" has a one-chord, modal blues structure found in other songs Willie Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, such as "Wang Dang Doodle" and "Back Door Man", and in Wolf's own "Smokestack Lightning". It uses eight-bar vocal sections with twelve-bar choruses and is performed at a medium blues tempo in the key of E. Music critic Bill Janovitz describes it as "brutal, powerful Wolf bellowing in his raspy style. There are few recordings that equal the powerful force of 'Spoonful,' or, for that matter, any other Wolf/Dixon Chess side."

Cream, based at the Nation nightclub in Liverpool, is one of the best-known night clubs in the world. Cream began life as a weekly house music night at Nation, and ran in this format for over 10 years, from October 1992 to June 2002. Over the ten years of weekly Saturday nights at Nation, the club played host to many international DJ superstars, including Paul Oakenfold (who was resident DJ throughout 1997 and 1998), Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Sasha, Roger Sanchez, Graeme Park, Andy Weatherall plus early exclusive DJ sets from The Chemical Brothers.

History

CREAM was founded by Andy Carroll, James Barton and Darren Hughes as a place to party with friends and family . Cream's opening night took place on Saturday October 17, 1992, when special guest Fabi Paras joined Paul Myers and Paul Bleasdale on the decks. Week two Andy and James graced the decks and made regular appearances for many years.

Cream were a 1960s British rock supergroup power trio consisting of bassist/singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/singer Eric Clapton. Their unique sound was characterised by a hybrid of blues rock, hard rock and psychedelic rock, combining psychedelia themes, Clapton's blues guitar playing, Bruce's powerful, versatile vocals and prominent bass playing, Baker's distinctive, pulsating, jazz-influenced drumming and Pete Brown's poetry-inspired lyrics. The group's third album, Wheels of Fire (1968), was the world's first platinum-selling double album. The band is widely regarded as being the world's first successful supergroup. In their career, they sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Their music included songs based on traditional blues such as "Crossroads" and "Spoonful", and modern blues such as "Born Under a Bad Sign", as well as more eccentric songs such as "Strange Brew", "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Toad".

Cream (rapper)

Kim Ki Seok (Hangul: 김기석; born February 14, 1990) better known by his stage name Young Cream (or simply "Cream"), is a South Korean rapper and beatboxer. He is best known as a member of a South Korean K-pop hip-hop group, M.I.B (band) as a rapper of the group. He made his recording debut with the single, "Do You Like Me" just before his debut as a member of M.I.B (band) He is currently signed under Jungle Entertainment.

1990–2013: Early life and career beginnings

Cream was born on February 14, 1990 in Daejeon, South Korea. He debuted as a member of M.I.B (band), under the label Jungle Entertainment on October 25, 2011 with the title track "G.D.M" aka "Girls, Drinks, Money." His single track "Do You Like Me?" released on October 10, 2011 as a part of a spin-off promotion to prove that each member is capable of standing alone.
