Spiro Çomora

Spiro Çomora (1918-1973) was an Albanian playwright of the 20th century, famous mostly as a comedist. He is most known for the comedy Karnavalet e Korçës (English: Korçë's carnevals), which premiered in 1961 and earned him national fame. Çomora has also written children poetry and has distinguished himself as a translator.

Life

Spiro Çomora was born on January 31, 1918, in Corfu, Greece, from a family hailing from Vuno in the Albanian riviera. His most famous comedy was Karnavalet e Korçës (English: Korçë's carnevals) (1961).

Çomora created also poetry for children, as well as translated into Albanian works of Ancient Greece dramaturgs, such as Odissey of Homer and Lysistrata of Aristophanes. He is also known for his satire articles in the Hosteni magazine.

Çomora died in 1973, 55 years old.

In 2012, Çomora was posthumously given the title Honor of Himara.

Spiro (band)

Spiro is an instrumental musical group based in Bristol, England. They emerged from the Bristol session scene in 1993, first playing with each other (and others) at The Robin Hood public house, on St. Michael's Hill, in regular open sessions run by landlord and landlady, Simon and Sally Pyner, and soon settling on a line-up which remains unchanged to this day. They released three albums under the name The Famous Five (The Famous Five, 1993, Wasp With Horn, also 1993 and Lost in Fishponds, 1994, the first two on cassette only, the last being released on CD). The first cassette did not include Jon Hunt, but instead included Dave Thorogood on Uilleann and Scottish bagpipes and Noel Russell on Bodhran (it is possible that this is a mis-spelling of Bristolian percussionist, Neil Russell, ex- of Skin the Peeler).

Their first album under the name Spiro, Pole Star (1997), saw a development of their interest in fusing minimalist classical influences with the traditional music of the North of England. In 2009 they signed to UK label Real World Records, since when they have released three albums, Lightbox (2009), Kaleidophonica (2012) and Welcome Joy and Welcome Sorrow (2015) as well as a mini-album, The Vapourer (2013), with live recordings by the group and Moog versions of two of their compositions by Portishead's Adrian Utley.

Blue box

A blue box is an electronic device that generates the same tones employed by a telephone operator's dialing console to switch long-distance calls. A blue box is a tool that emerged in the 1960s and '70s; it allowed users to route their own calls by emulating the in-band signaling mechanism that then controlled switching in long distance dialing systems. The most typical use of a blue box was to place free telephone calls. A related device, the black box enabled one to receive calls which were free to the caller. The blue box no longer works in most Western nations, as modern switching systems do not use in-band signaling. Instead, signaling occurs on an out-of-band channel which cannot be accessed from the line the caller is using, a system called Common Channel Interoffice Signaling or CCIS.

History

In November 1954, the Bell System Technical Journal published an article titled "In-Band Single-Frequency Signaling" which described the process used for routing telephone calls over trunk lines with the then-current signaling system, R1. The article described the basics of the inter-office trunking system and the signalling used. This, while handy, could not be used in and of itself, as the frequencies used for the Multi-Frequency, or "MF", tones were not published in this article.
