The song, written and produced by Swift with Nathan Chapman, was released as a promotional single on October 5, 2010, by Big Machine Records from her 2010 album of the same name. Swift wrote the song about interrupting a wedding, after conversing with her friend, whose ex-boyfriend would soon wed to someone else, and having a dream about one of her own ex-boyfriends marrying another girl. The song relies on acoustic guitar and is a narration of from the perspective of a person who crashes her former love's wedding in attempt to win him back.
The song opened to critical acclaim for its lyrical detail. "Speak Now" had successful commercial outcomes in Canada and the United States, debuting and peaking at number eight on both the Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot 100. The Speak Now World Tour was the second concert tour by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Also referred to as the Speak Now World Tour 2011 and the Speak Now World Tour 2012, the tour was launched in support of her third studio album, Speak Now (2010). The tour visited Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. The tour ranked tenth in Pollstar's "Top 50 Worldwide Tour (Mid-Year)", earning over $40 million. At the conclusion of 2011, the tour placed fourth on Pollstar's annual "Top 25 Worldwide Tours", earning $104.2 million with 100 shows. This made Speak Now World Tour the highest grossing female and solo tour of 2011.

While promoting Speak Now, Swift mentioned her excitement for her upcoming tour. She stated the tour was going to be "big" and "extensive". On November 23, 2010, various media outlets—including Billboard magazine announced the second tour by Swift.
