Advance (1874)

The Advance was a composite schooner built in 1874 at Auckland, that was wrecked when it drifted onto rocks at Henrys Head, Botany Bay, New South Wales, on 12 June 1902, whilst carrying ballast between Wollongong and Newcastle.

Ship description and construction

During the 1870s, the shipbuilding trade in and around Auckland was rapidly expanding, with shipbuilding occurring in numerous little bays and harbours due to the abundant timber suitable for shipbuilding purposes. The Advance, a wooden schooner of 51 tons, was built in Tolaga Bay in 1874. She made her maiden trading voyage in mid-January 1875 from Port of Auckland to Gisborne carrying passengers, 20 tons of coal, lumber, flour and other general cargo.

Service history

The Advance was a regular trader between East Coast ports Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton, under the ownership of Mr. John Trimmer. The vessel was then purchased by Messrs Keans and Company, and was for some years commanded by Captain Kennedy.

While she operated in Australia, the Advance became a well known schooner, employed in the coastal coal trade and for a number of years trading between Sydney and the Northern and Southern collieries.

USS Advance (1862)

USS Advance, later known as the USS Frolic, was a blockade runner captured by the Union Navy during the closing years of the American Civil War. She was purchased by the Union Navy and outfitted as a gunboat and assigned to the blockade of the waterways of the Confederate States of America. She also served as dispatch ship and supply vessel when military action eventually slowed down.

Service with the Confederacy

The second United States Navy ship to be so named, Advance – a schooner-rigged, sidewheel steamer built at Greenock, Scotland, by Caird & Co. was launched on 3 July 1862 as the Clyde packet Lord Clyde – was jointly purchased by the state of North Carolina and the firm of Lord, Power & Co. to serve as a blockade runner during the Civil War. She was renamed A. D. Vance (in some sources written as "Advance") in honor of the Governor of North Carolina, Zebulon B. Vance. She completed more than 20 highly successful voyages and 40 close calls with Union ships standing blockade watches.

Spanking

Spanking is a type of corporal punishment involving the act of striking the buttocks of another person to cause physical pain, generally with an open hand (more commonly referred to in some countries as slapping or smacking). More severe forms of spanking, such as switching, paddling, belting, caning, whipping, and birching, involve the use of an implement instead of a hand. Parents commonly spank children or adolescents in response to undesired behavior. Boys are more frequently spanked than girls, both at home and in school. Some countries have outlawed the spanking of children in every setting, including homes, schools, and penal institutions, but most allow it when done by a parent or guardian. Adults may spank other adults as well, often in an erotic context.

Terminology

In North America, the word "spanking" has often been used as a synonym for an official paddling in school, and sometimes even as a euphemism for the formal corporal punishment of adults in an institution.

In British English, most dictionaries define "spanking" as being given only with the open hand.

Spank (Rachel Stamp song)

"Spank" is a single by London glam rock band, Rachel Stamp. This single was the first release via the Cruisin' Records label, an independent record label set up by the band's manager, Sil Wilcox, and distributed across the UK by Pinnacle. There was no promotional video made to promote this release; however, a live video of "Spank" (directed by Corin Hardy and filmed at the band's Hallowe'en show at the London Astoria in 2000) later appeared as a bonus multimedia track on the "Black Cherry" CD single (released in 2002).
