South Sioux City, Nebraska

South Sioux City is a city in Dakota County, Nebraska, United States. It is located immediately across the Missouri River from Sioux City, Iowa, and is part of the Sioux City, IA-NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 13,353, making it the 14th largest city in Nebraska.

History

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed through the South Sioux City area in 1804.

European settlement on the Nebraska side of the river began as early as 1854. Several town sites were platted and incorporated in the 1850s. Pacific City, incorporated in 1858, was a short-lived settlement. Covington and South Covington, both incorporated in 1857, merged in 1870. Another town, Stanton, was founded in 1856.

South Sioux City was incorporated in 1887. A special election in 1893 approved the merger of Covington and Stanton into the city of South Sioux City.

Sioux City, Iowa

Sioux City (/ˌsuːˈsɪti/) is a city in Woodbury and Plymouth counties in the western part of the State of Iowa. The population was 82,684 in the 2010 census, which makes it the fourth largest city in Iowa. The bulk of the city is in Woodbury County, of which it is the county seat, though a small portion is in Plymouth County.

Sioux City is the primary city of the five-county Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), with a population of 168,825 in 2010 and a slight increase to an estimated 168,921 in 2012. The Sioux City–Vermillion, IA–NE–SD Combined Statistical Area had a population of 182,675 as of 2010 and has grown to an estimated population of 183,052 as of 2012.

Sioux City is at the navigational head of the Missouri River, about 95 miles north of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. Sioux City and the surrounding areas of northwestern Iowa, northeastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota are sometimes referred to as Siouxland, especially by the local media.

Sioux City is a 1994 mystery / crime film directed by and starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Gary Farmer as Russell White, Tantoo Cardinal as Dawn Rainfeather, and future Touched by an Angel star John Dye as Colin Adams.

Plot

A young Lakota Sioux (Lou Diamond Phillips) is adopted by a wealthy Jewish couple. When he ages he gets in touch with his cultural roots following the death of his mother.

"Sioux City Sarsaparilla" is the name of a song played by Children of Bodom's Alexi Laiho from the Finnish Guitar Heroes compilation album.

In the film The Big Lebowski, the character of the Stranger (Sam Elliott) asks a bartender, "D'you got a good sarsaparilla?" to which the bartender replies, "Sioux City Sarsaparilla." The Stranger then says, "Yeah, that's a good one."
