South Beach

South Beach, also nicknamed SoBe, is a neighborhood in the city of Miami Beach, Florida, United States, located due east of Miami city proper between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The area encompasses all of the barrier islands of Miami Beach south of Indian Creek.

This area was the first section of Miami Beach to be developed, starting in the 1910s, thanks to the development efforts of Carl G. Fisher, the Lummus Brothers, and John S. Collins, the latter whose construction of the Collins Bridge provided the first vital land link between mainland Miami and the beaches.

The area has gone through numerous artificial and natural changes over the years, including a booming regional economy, increased tourism, and the 1926 hurricane, which destroyed much of the area. In 2010, 39,186 people lived in South Beach.

History

South Beach started as farmland. In 1870, Henry and Charles Lum purchased 165 acres (67 ha) for coconut farming. Charles Lum built the first house on the beach in 1886. In 1894, the Lum brothers left the island, leaving control of the plantation to John Collins, who came to South Beach two years later to survey the land. He used the land for farming purposes, discovering fresh water and extending his parcel from 14th Street to 67th in 1907.

South Beach (nightclub)

South Beach is an after hours nightclub located in Houston, Texas within the Neartown area which opened in 2002 on the former site of Club Heaven. The 10,000-square-foot (930 m²) dance club located at 810 Pacific Street is popular among the city's gay community. Among South Beach’s many features is a full-color water-cooled matrix laser light show utilizing Kryogen Ifex liquid ice Jets that spray out a thick cloud of liquid Ice. The ice jets have the ability to reduce the temperature of the club by 20 °F (−7 °C) in a few seconds. Additionally, the club also features go-go boys.

South Beach is owned by Charles Armstrong. Charles Armstrong also owns a number of other gay venues in the same area, including JR's Bar & Grill, Montrose Mining Company, and Meteor.

Reception

In 2007, the club was voted Houston's Best Gay Bar by AOL City Guide and again was awarded Houston's Best Gay Bar 2008 and Houston's Best Dance Club 2008 by AOL City Guide. The club was previously awarded as one of the "Best of 2006" by the Houston Press.

South Beach (2006 TV series)

South Beach is a primetime television drama that ran from January 4 to February 22, 2006 on UPN. Created by Matt Cirulnick, one of its executive producers was singer/actress Jennifer Lopez. The program was panned by critics and shunned by viewers, finishing 152nd in the Nielsen TV ratings rankings for the 2005-06 season. It was canceled after eight first-run episodes. South Beach was produced by Paramount Television and 44 Blue Productions.

There are currently no plans to release South Beach on DVD and/or Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment.

Synopsis

Vincent and Matt are two friends from Brooklyn who decide to move to glamorous South Beach in order to seek out better opportunities. Vincent has aims of meeting with beautiful women and getting ahead by any means necessary, while Matt supposedly only wants to make enough money to go back to university, since his dad blew his college fund. However, as it turns out, Matt has other reasons for going to South Beach as well.

Neighborhoods in San Francisco

San Francisco, California, has both major, well-known neighborhoods and districts as well as smaller, specific subsections and developments. While there is considerable fluidity among the sources, one guidebook identifies five major districts, corresponding to the four quadrants plus a south central district. South Beach (novel)

South Beach is a young adult novel by American author Aimee Friedman. It is a New York Times bestseller. The plot concerns two 16-year-old girls from New Jersey: Holly Jacobson, a sporty, reserved young girl, and Alexandria 'Alexa' St Laurent, a popular aspiring photographer with a wild side. The two former best friends take a trip to South Beach in Florida for their spring break, and find out that, occasionally, opposites attract.

South Beach was described as a light piece of teen chick-lit by the School Library Journal.
