The Source (magazine)

The Source is a United States-based monthly full-color magazine covering hip-hop music, politics, and culture, founded in 1988. It is the world's longest running rap periodical, being founded as a newsletter in 1988.

History

The Source was originally started by two Harvard University students in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Jonathan Shecter and David Mays. They decided to hire their college friends James Bernard (as senior editor) and Ed Young (as associate publisher), and the four men immediately became shareholders in the ownership of the magazine. At the time, Mays handled duties as the publisher for the magazine, and Shecter was the editor-in-chief. The magazine's offices were moved from Massachusetts to New York City in 1990, a move that was made with the intention to expand the magazine into a mainstream market publication.

The magazine's annual awards show, known as The Source Awards, honors both hip-hop and R&B performers for their contributions to hip-hop. The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest award given to an emcee who has contributed his/her time to succeeding in the hip-hop music industry. The Source also releases a compilation album of hip-hop hits. The magazine expanded overseas with a French-language version, alongside The Source Latino and The Source Israel magazine franchises. The company invested in mobile phones and ringtones under The Source Mobile Channel moniker, in which subscribers are offered their favorite choice of hip-hop ringtones. The Source also invested in its own urban clothing apparel company.

Source is an international information support centre and digital library, providing links to academic resources and articles related to disability, health and international development.

About

Source provides access to a collection of more than 25,000 published and unpublished resources related to health, disability and international development. This includes books, journals, reports, posters, CD-ROMs, manuals, websites and organisations.

Source was set up as a collaborative venture of Healthlink Worldwide, a non-profit organisation, and the Centre for International Health and Development, an academic institution. Handicap International became a partner shortly after. The information support centre aims to increase access to health and disability related resources, produced for and by people with disabilities in developing countries, in order to promote research and learning among health professionals, students, disabled people’s organisations (DPOs) and NGOs working in international development world-wide.

Source magazine is a free bi-monthly magazine published by the John Brown Group on behalf of Greenbee, John Lewis, and Waitrose, all three of which are owned by the John Lewis Partnership, with articles covering interior design, beauty, the arts, travel, finance, and lifestyle.

Conception

Source magazine was launched in Autumn 2006, around the time the John Lewis Partnership launched Greenbee, its new direct services company, providing selected services, from insurance to ticket sales and internet service. Source was thus conceived, as well as being a source of entertainment and information, to introduce customers to the Greenbee services (helping to make it a household name), and to reinforce the relationship between the John Lewis Partnership and its customers. It comes from the same stable as Waitrose Food Illustrated, a magazine published for 10 years.

Target audience

Source is intended to appeal to typical John Lewis and Waitrose customers, that is, predominantly upper middle class and middle class (A, B, and to some extent C1) older people. As such, returning advertisers include Prada, Lancôme, Samsung, AEG, and Panasonic. In order to appeal to younger customers, Source has undergone slight changes to give it a more modern look, including changing the font on the spine from serif to sans-serif, and writing the issue numbers in numeric format rather than text.

Award

An award is something given to a person, a group of people, or an organization to recognize their excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. History

On 24 October 1996, Award Software International Inc. announced its initial public offering.

On 16 June 1997, Award Software International Inc. announced the acquisition of BIOS upgrades provider Unicore Software, Inc. making it a subsidiary of Award.

On 16 April 1998, Phoenix Technologies Ltd. and Award Software International Inc. announced the completion of a definitive merger agreement, where Phoenix Technologies Ltd. would become the surviving corporate entity following the merger completion on 30 June 1998. The merger was completed on 28 September 1998.

After merger

After the Phoenix–Award merger, later revisions of Award BIOS still attribute copyright to Award Software Inc instead of Phoenix Technologies Ltd., including the UEFI firmware.
