Kyuss (/ˈkaɪ.əs/ KY-əs) was an American stoner rock band, formed in Palm Desert, California, in 1987 by Josh Homme (guitar), John Garcia (vocals), Brant Bjork (drums) and Chris Cockrell (bass). After releasing an EP under the name Sons of Kyuss in 1990, the band shortened its name to Kyuss and recruited Nick Oliveri. Over the next five years the band released four full-length albums, and one last split EP in 1997 as Kyuss and the newly formed Queens of the Stone Age. This tied up the loose ends of Kyuss and introduced the new band Queens of the Stone Age, which was at one time composed entirely of ex-Kyuss members.
Nick Oliveri was fired from the band in 1992 and replaced by Scott Reeder just prior to the release of Blues for the Red Sun. Brant Bjork decided to leave the band in 1993, citing creative differences, and was replaced by Alfredo Hernández from the seminal Palm Desert Scene band Yawning Man. John Garcia and Josh Homme would be the band's only continuous members throughout the band's lifetime. Kyuss eventually split up in 1995, and since then, members of Kyuss have gone on to form or play in several notable bands including Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, Dwarves, Eagles of Death Metal, Mondo Generator, Hermano, Unida, Slo Burn and Them Crooked Vultures.
Sons of Kyuss is the debut self-released EP from American rock band Kyuss. This EP marks the band's only release prior to shortening its moniker from "Sons of Kyuss" to simply "Kyuss".
With an original pressing of only 500 copies, the EP has become very rare. It was reissued on CD in 1995 as a "Special Limited Remastered Farewell Edition" with tracks from a gig in Germany added as bonus material, then in 2000 for the 10 year anniversary. LP reissues followed in 2009. All versions are bootlegs (both CD versions are taken from an inferior vinyl copy), and no official reissue of the EP has ever been released.
The tracks "Deadly Kiss", "Isolation Desolation", "Love Has Passed Me By", "Black Widow" and "Katzenjammer" were later included on the band's debut album Wretch. "Isolation Desolation", "Love Has Passed Me By" and "Katzenjammer" were re-recorded, while the Sons of Kyuss versions of "Deadly Kiss" and "Black Widow" were included on the album.
The album was released on clear vinyl with a slight turquoise tinge. Bootleg reissues of the album from 2009 were made using dark green wax or fully transparent vinyl.
Sons of the sea, sons of the saint,
Who is the child with no complaint;
Sons of the great or sons unknown
All were children like your own.
The same sweet smiles, the same sad tears,
The cries at night, the nightmare fears,
Sons of the great, sons unknown,
All were children like your own.
Sons of tycoons, or sons from the farms
All of the children ran from your arms.
Through fields of gold, through fields of ruin,
All of the children vanished too soon.
In towering waves, in walls of flesh,
Amid dying birds trembling with death,
Sons of tycoons, sons from the farms,
All of the children ran from your arms.
Sons of your sons, sons passing by,
Children were lost in lullaby.
Sons of true love, sons of regret,
All of your sons you can never forget.
Some build the roads, some wrote the poems,
Some went to war, some never came home.
Sons of your sons, sons passing by,
