A songbird is a bird belonging to the clade Passeri of the perching birds (Passeriformes). Another name that is sometimes seen as a scientific or vernacular name is Oscines, from Latin oscen, "a songbird". This group contains some 4,000 species found all over the world, in which the vocal organ typically is developed in such a way as to produce a diverse and elaborate bird song.
Songbirds form one of the two major lineages of extant perching birds, the other being the Tyranni which are most diverse in the Neotropics and absent from many parts of the world. These have a simpler syrinx musculature, and while their vocalizations are often just as complex and striking as those of songbirds, they are altogether more mechanical sounding. There is a third perching bird lineage, the Acanthisitti from New Zealand, of which only two species remain alive today.
There is evidence to suggest that songbirds evolved 50 million years ago in the part of Gondwana that later became Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and Antarctica, before spreading around the world.
"Songbird" is a song sung by Swedish singer-songwriter Ellen Benediktson and written by Sharon Vaughn, Johan Fransson, Tim Larsson and Tobias Lundgren. The song is best known for being performed by Benediktson at Melodifestivalen 2014. It qualified for the final from the first semifinal held in Malmö placing second out of eight. In the final, the song placed seventh out of ten.
On 6 April 2014, the song entered Svensktoppen.
A songbird is a bird belonging to the suborder Passeri of Passeriformes. Song bird or songbird may also refer to:
I listened to a bird
that told me all
He seemed to make no sense as I recall
I listened to the bees, their buzzing sounds
Told nothing of the purpose of their rounds
The claws that tear, the fangs that bite
The placid pond, the bird in flight
The lion stalking 'round his kill
The flowers purpose on the hill
I looked out at the trees that gently swayed
They didn't need to know how they were made
I wondered if the world kept something hid
Denied to me, for something that I did
The claws that tear, the fangs that bite
The placid pond, the bird in flight
The lion stalking 'round his kill
The flowers purpose on the hill
I listened to a bird that told me all
He seemed to make no sense as I recall
So far I haven't heard a songbird sing
A single verse that told me anything
The claws that tear, the fangs that bite
The placid pond, the bird in flight
The lion stalking 'round his kill
