"Ode to Joy" (German: "Ode an die Freude", first line: "Freude, schöner Götterfunken") is an ode written in 1785 by the German poet, playwright and historian Friedrich Schiller, enthusiastically celebrating the brotherhood and unity of all mankind. Despite the lasting popularity of the ode, Schiller himself regarded it as a failure later in his life, going so far as calling it "detached from reality" and "of value maybe for us two, but not for the world, nor for the art of poetry" in a letter to his long-time friend and patron Körner (whose friendship had originally inspired him to write the ode) that he wrote in the year 1800.

The ode is best known for its musical setting in D major by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824), a choral symphony for orchestra, four solo voices and choir.

The Beethoven setting was adopted as the Anthem of Europe by the Council of Europe in 1972 and the then European Community—since 1993 the European Union—in 1985; the tune was also used in the anthem of Rhodesia. It has been used in a number of other contexts: notably in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange, a Muppet viral video starring Beaker, and in the Die Hard film franchise, In 1996, It became the theme song for Triple H in the World Wrestling Federation until early 1998. It is also the basic melody for the hymn "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" as well as for the songs "A Song of Joy" by Miguel Ríos, and "Road To Joy" by Bright Eyes.

Other musical settings of the poem include:

    Blue Haze

Blue Haze is a compilation of tracks recorded in 1953 and 1954 by Miles Davis for Prestige Records. It is a reissue in 12" format of the 10" LP Miles Davis Quartet (PRLP 161), with "I'll Remember April" added. Tracks 4,6, 7, and 8 come from Prestige PREP 1326, The Miles Davis Quartet, recorded 19 May 1953. It features a quartet with John Lewis on piano —replaced on "Smooch" by its co-composer Charles MingusPercy Heath, the bassist throughout the album, and Max Roach on drums. Tracks 2, 3, and 5, from March 15, 1954, with Horace Silver on piano and Art Blakey on drums, were first released on PREP 1360, titled Miles Davis Quartet. The first track on the album is from the 3 April 1954 session which resulted in half of the album Walkin' (and was originally included on the 10" LP Miles Davis Quintet (PRLP 185)).

The compositions "Four" and "Tune Up" were always credited to Davis, although both are claimed by Eddie Vinson to be his compositions. Vinson was a known blues singer at that time and had no use for them and gave Davis permission to record them. No one was opposed to the false crediting until "recently", as Jack Chambers wrote in Milestones 1983.

    Song Of Blue

    by: Carter's Chord

Sing to me a song that's blue
And I'll paint my eyes blue, that's what I'll do
If the sun is shinin' through
I'll smile for you, I'll smile for you
'Cause I'm in love with your music
And I'm in love with your song, yeah
And I'm in love with the days
That make the moments seem long
You make the moments seem long
Sing to me a song that bleeds
So I can hold your wounds close to me
And if you feel like kissin' me baby
I'll try hard to breathe, I'll try my hardest to breathe
'Cause I'm in love with your music, your music
And I'm in love with your song, yeah, yeah
And I'm in love with the days
That make the moments seem long
You make the moments seem long
And I'm sick of the world
Layin' emptiness at my feet now
And I'm sick of the lies
That keep burnin' my mind till it bleeds
    You came from the shore
That can wash my hands clean
Now I'm free, I'm free to be me
I'm in love with your music
And I'm in love with your song, yeah, yeah
And I'm in love with the days
That make the moments seem long, yeah
    Make the moments seem long
You make the moments seem long
