Sonamukhi is a town and a municipality in Bankura District in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Sonamukhi is located at 23°18′N 87°25′E / 23.3°N 87.42°E / 23.3; 87.42. It has an average elevation of 66 m (217 ft).
Sonamukhi is the birthplace of Haranath and KusumKumari Devi. They are the reincarnation of Gouranga also known as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This place is considered equal importance among devotees as that of places like Vrindavan and Nabadwip respective birthplace of Krishna and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Besides the temple of Kusumharanath there other temples such as Manohar Das Thakur etc. Adjacent to the temple of Kusumharanath there is Ananta Kunda which water is sacred.
As of 2001 India census, Sonamukhi had a population of 27,348. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Sonamukhi has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Sonamukhi, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Sonamukhi (community development block) is an administrative division in Bishnupur subdivision of Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Sonamukhi police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Sonamukhi.

As per 2001 census, Sonamukhi block had a total population of 142,305, out of which 73,200 were males and 69,105 were females. Sonamukhi block registered a population growth of 15.07 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for the district was 15.15 per cent. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.
Sonamukhi (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is an assembly constituency in Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is reserved for scheduled castes.
As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 258 Sonamukhi (Vidhan Sabha constituency) (SC) is composed of the following: Sonamukhi municipality; Sonamukhi community development block; and Belut Rasulpur, Beersingha, Hamirpur, Narayanpur and Patrasayar gram panchayats of Patrasayer community development block.
Sonamukhi (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is part of No. 37 Bishnupur (Lok Sabha constituency).

In the 2006 state assembly elections, Niresh Bagdi of CPI(M) won the Sonamukhi assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Dipali Saha of Trinamool Congress. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Sukhendu Khan of CPI(M) defeated Dipali Saha of Trinamool Congress in 2001. Haradhan Bauri of CPI(M) defeated Pulakesh Saha of Congress in 1996 and Sastidhar Bagdi of Congress in 1991. Sukhendu Khan of CPI(M) defeated Kallol Saha of Congress in 1987, Sasthi Bauri of Congress in 1982 and Kanai Saha of Janata Party in 1977.
