Sometimes (Ash song)

"Sometimes" was the third single released from the Free All Angels album by the band Ash on June 9, 2001. It was released as a single CD (released on 2CD formats, the first of which being an enhanced CD) as a 7" vinyl (which was limited edition and came with a numbered picture gatefold sleeve), as well as on DVD format. Although "Sometimes" did relatively poorly in the singles charts (reaching #21), it helped contribute to increase in sales for Free All Angels.

"Sometimes" is a poetic love song, and is regarded as one of the stand out tracks from the album. The song originally slated to be the second single from the album, but the band opted for the heavier track "Burn Baby Burn" in its place.

The song is almost always present in the live set, and is definitely a fan favourite, showing a different side to the band than that of heavier albums such as 1977 and Meltdown. The song can also be found on the Intergalactic Sonic 7″s hits collection.

B-Sides

The first b-side on CD1 is "Skullfull of Sulphur", a heart-string pulling Wheeler track based around an acoustic guitar. This song has rarely, if ever, been in the band's set list. However, when whispers came in 2004 of an Ash acoustic album, this was one of the track being considered for it.

"Sometimes" is a song recorded the indietronica group Miami Horror was released in October 23, 2009.

VARA

The Omroepvereniging VARA (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɔmrupfəˌreːnəɣɪŋ ˈvaːraː]), the VARA Broadcasting Association, is a Dutch public broadcasting association that operates within the framework of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system.

The association was founded in 1925 as the Vereeniging van Arbeiders Radio Amateurs (Association of Worker Radio Amateurs). The name was changed to Omroepvereniging VARA in 1957 and is no longer an acronym.

VARA originally focused on labour and socialism. In the era of Dutch pillarization the association had close links to the Social Democratic Workers Party and its successor, the Labour Party. For many years VARA's chairmen, such as Marcel van Dam and Andre Kloos, were prominent members of the party. Although the connection between the two organizations loosened, affinities remain—such as a large overlap between their respective support bases.

VARA adopted its current logo in 2002.

Vara (river)

The Vara is a river of the Province of La Spezia in Liguria, north-west Italy.

Geography

The river runs through Varese Ligure, Brugnato, Borghetto di Vara and Castiglione di Vara. At 58 kilometres (36 mi) it is the longest river in Liguria. The main source of the river is on Monte Zatta; for much of its course it flows in a southeasterly direction, parallel to the Riviera di levante, in the valley which takes its name: the Val di Vara. The river flows into the Magra, as a right tributary, at Fornola within the commune of Santo Stefano di Magra.

History

The Département du Vara or Dipartimento del Vara of Ligurian Republic took its name at the end of the XVIII century from the river.

Spanish customary units

There are a number of Spanish units of measurement of length or area that are now virtually obsolete (due to metrication). They include the vara, the cordel, the league and the labor. The units of area used to express the area of land are still encountered in some transactions in land today. For example, the 'vara' is still used in Costa Rica when ordering lumber.

Vara (unit of length)

A vara (meaning "rod" or "pole", abbreviation: var) is an old Spanish unit of length. Varas are a surveying unit that appear in many deeds in the southern United States, and varas were also used in many parts of Latin America. It varied in size at various times and places; the Spanish unit was set at about 835.905 mm (32.91 in) in 1801. In Argentina, the vara measured about 866 mm (34.1 in), and typical urban lots are 8.66 m (28.41 ft) wide (10 Argentine varas). At some time a value of 33 inches (838.2 mm) was adopted in California.

In Texas, a vara was defined as 33 ¹⁄₃ inches (846.67 mm), or 1 yard = 1.08 vara. The vara and the corresponding unit of area, the square vara, were introduced in the 19th century to measure Spanish land grants. In Texas, Stephen F. Austin's early surveying contracts required that he use the vara as a standard unit. The vara can be seen in many deeds as late as the mid to late 1900s. 1 acre (0.405 ha) is equivalent to 5,645.376 Texan square varas. A league is equivalent to 5,000 varas squared or 4,428.4 acres (1,792.11 ha).
