Tropical music

Tropical music (Spanish: música tropical) is a category used in the music industry to denote Latin music from the Caribbean. It encompasses music from the Spanish-speaking islands and coasts of the Caribbean, as well as genres rooted in this region such as salsa.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the term tropical music was created to cover all music from the hispanophone Caribbean excluding Cuban music, which had its own category and niche within the American (and to a lesser extent European) music market. However, later in the 20th century after the Cuban Revolution, tropical music gained a broader meaning and began to be used in order to distinguish Caribbean genres such as cumbia and son cubano from inland genres such as tejano and norteño.

Characteristics

Due to its geographical roots, tropical music generally combines elements from European and African traditions. An example of this is the process of binarization of ternary rhythms brought from Africa, which took place originally in Cuba, later spreading throughout the rest of the Caribbean and Latin America. The presence of syncopated polyrhythms of African origin make most tropical music naturally dance-oriented. Tropical music instrumentation also includes both European (tres, piano, trumpet, timbales) and African-descended (congas, bongos, marimba) instruments. During the late 20th century, contemporary instruments such as synthesizers and drum machines were incorporated.

Something (TVXQ song)

"Something" is a song by South Korean pop duo TVXQ, also known as Tohoshinki in Japan. Serving as the lead single for their seventh Korean studio album Tense (2014), the song was produced by TVXQ's long-time collaborator Yoo Young-jin and co-written by Yoo with his brother Yoo Han-jin. Introduced as TVXQ's tenth anniversary comeback single, "Something" was released by S.M. Entertainment on January 6, 2014. Two versions of the song exist; the original Korean-language version, and a Japanese-language version, which was released by Avex Trax as a double A-sided CD single, along with "Hide & Seek", in Japan on February 5, 2014. It served as the fourth and final single release for the duo's seventh Japanese studio album, Tree (2014). Within a week of its release, the single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for shipments of over 100,000.

Noted for being a major musical departure from TVXQ's earlier songs, "Something" is a song that incorporates swing performance styles with modern dance-pop. The song deals with a narcissistic male protagonist who tells women that they need to have "that something" in order to attract him. The accompanying music video, filmed in early December 2013, premiered on January 1, 2014 at 6pm KST.

Something (Shirley Bassey album)

Something is a 1970 album by Shirley Bassey. With her career having been in decline since the latter part of the mid 1960s, Something proved to be Shirley Bassey's comeback when it was released in August 1970. The title track single became her biggest UK hit for many years, reaching No.4 and spending 22 weeks on the chart. This was actually the second single featured on the album, "The Sea and Sand" having already been released earlier. The album was similarly her biggest hit for many years in the album charts, reaching No.5 and spending 28 weeks in the top 50.

This album led to a major revival in Bassey's career, and it would see Bassey transform into mainly an album artist, recording fifteen albums in the 1970s (four of those live recordings). Of those three would be top ten albums, three others in the top fifteen, and a further four in the top 40. She would also reach the top three twice, with a pair of compilations. (UK Albums Chart)

This was also her first work with record producer Noel Rogers and producer/arranger Johnny Harris, who built on Bassey's traditional pop roots to include contemporary songs and arrangements.

Girl's Day

Girl's Day (Hangul: 걸스데이) is a four-member South Korean girl group formed under Dream Tea Entertainment, a subsidiary of Wellmade Yedang in 2010. The group consists of four girls who perform under the stage names of Sojin, Minah, Yura and Hyeri. Their official fan club name is Dai5y, changing the S in daisy as they had 5 members when they created this name.

Career

Pre-debut

Dream Tea started Girl's Day promotions before their debut with the creation of an official blog, YouTube channel, and Twitter accounts for the group and each member. A forum made by fans was also recognized by the company as their official international forum. The group also had dance flash mobs before their debut at the commercial and entertainment districts of Seoul, gaining interest of the public.

2010: Debut, line-up change, "Nothing Lasts Forever"

On July 7, the group released their first music video for the song "Tilt My Head". Two days later their debut mini-album. Girl's Day Party 1, was also released. They went on to further promote the album by releasing a second music video on July 21 for the track titled "How About Me", which was about summer. On September 12, only two months after their debut, it was announced that members Ji Sun and Ji In had left the group to pursue their respective interests; Yura and Hyeri were then added to the group. On October 29, the new line-up released their first digital single album, Girl's Day Party 2, which includes the lead track, "Nothing Lasts Forever" (잘해줘봐야 Jalhaejwo Bwaya).

Pretty Ricky (album)

Pretty Ricky is the third studio album by Pretty Ricky. It was released on November 17, 2009, and is the first album to feature new member Lingerie since the departure of Pleasure P and 4Play.

Commercial performance

The album sales with this album never competed with the sales of the last two gold albums debuting at #97 on the Billboard 200 selling 10,000 copies in the first week.

The first single from the album was "Tipsy (In Dis Club)" and a video for the single is available. The second single was "Say a Command" and it also has a video that is available.

Epiphany (T-Pain album)

Epiphany is the second studio album by American record producer and recording artist T-Pain. It was released on June 5, 2007, by his record label Nappy Boy Entertainment, distributed by Akon's label Konvict Muzik and Jive Records. The album marks as his first for T-Pain; who is launching his own record label Nappy Boy Entertainment.

Music and lyrics

The fifth track "I Got It" describes as a skit of people whose been diagnosed with HIV. The sixth track "Suicide" is a song describing the people, whose been dealing within having some suicidal thoughts, after detailing the subject of being diagnosed with HIV; upon the previous track "I Got It".

Singles

The album's lead single, "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" was released on February 20, 2007. With its production was handled by T-Pain. The song features guest vocals from a fellow southern hip hop rapper Yung Joc. The song has peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming his highest-charting single as a lead artist.
