Geneviève Alison Jane Moyet (/ˈmɒjeɪ/; born 18 June 1961) is an English singer, songwriter and performer noted for her bluesy contralto voice. She came to prominence as half of the duo Yazoo and since has mainly worked as a solo artist.
Her UK album sales have reached a certified 23 million, with over a million singles sold. All seven of her studio albums and three compilation albums have charted in the Top 30 UK Album Chart, with two of the albums reaching number one. She has also achieved nine Top 30 singles and five Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart. Her most recent album The Minutes was released in the UK on 6 May 2013.
Moyet was born in the small Essex town of Billericay to a French father and English mother. She grew up in the nearby town of Basildon, where she attended Markhams Chase Junior School and then Nicholas Comprehensive at secondary level. Upon leaving school at 16, she worked as a shop assistant and trained as a piano tuner. She also worked for the cosmetic company Yardley. She was involved in a number of punk rock, pub rock and blues bands in the South East Essex area during the late 1970s and early 1980s, including the Vandals, the Screamin' Ab Dabs, the Vicars and the Little Roosters (the latter featuring Garrie Lammin, formerly of Cock Sparrer).
Solid wood is a term most commonly used to distinguish between ordinary lumber and engineered wood, but it also refers to structures that do not have hollow spaces. Engineered wood products are manufactured by binding together wood strands, fibers, or veneers with adhesives to form a composite material. Engineered wood includes plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and fiberboard. The fact that a product is made from solid wood is often touted in advertisements. However, using solid wood has advantages and disadvantages.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of solid wood is that the wood is the same all the way through, so repairs are relatively easy. Repairs to veneer are much more difficult and sometimes impossible.
Solid wood furniture is strong enough to easily satisfy all furniture applications, and it can last for centuries. Society is still questioning whether furniture made of plywood (often made from pine) can do the same. Plywood and other engineered wood products used to make furniture are typically covered with a veneer such as Cherry.
"Solid Wood" is vocalist Alison Moyet's second and final UK only single from 1995, being released to promote the UK number one compilation "Singles".
Two singles were released to promote the compilation, the first being a cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", written by Ewan MacColl. The single failed to reach the UK top 100. Despite this, "Solid Wood" was released shortly after, peaking at #44 in the UK for a total of two weeks.
This would be Moyet's last appearance in the Top 50 and her last Top 100 single chart in the UK until 2004's 'Almost Blue'/'Alfie' double A-side. Moyet wouldn't release another single until 2002 over disagreements between the Sony label and herself.
For the artwork, the previous single's artwork was reused for one certain edition whilst a new design featured on the other.
"Solid Wood" was written solely by Moyet and produced by Ian Broudie. Broudie is a British singer-songwriter, musician and record producer from Liverpool, England.
The b-side was "Blue", written by Moyet and usual songwriting partner Pete Glenister. "Blue" was later used as the theme for the BBC television drama series Playing the Field which ran from 1998-2002. "Blue" was written about the singer's love of Southend United F.C.
There's a train in that bell
Be still I won't hear it if you can
We could let it go
Stay here make the most of what we have
Sweet lie
I'll buy anything from you
We try tongue tied anything will do
On a simple whim no sense
We're all innocence and beer
Find a plastic cup and fall in
No one's ever going to hear
Don't ask me why
a seeing I
gives precedence to fools
There is flight in the sky
Close your eyes
Don't go higher than I am
Did we mean it all?
Don't mind
