Soldier

A soldier is one who fights as part of an organized land-based armed force. A soldier can be an enlisted person, a non-commissioned officer, or junior-commissioned officer, or an officer.

Etymology

The word soldier derives from the Middle English word soudeour, from Anglo-French soudeer or soudeour, meaning mercenary, from soudee, meaning shilling's worth or wage, from sou or soud, shilling. The word is also related to the Medieval Latin soldarius, meaning soldier (literally, "one having pay"). These words ultimately derive from the Late Latin word solidus, referring to an Ancient Roman coin used in the Byzantine Empire.

Occupational designations

In most armed forces use of the word 'soldier' has taken on a more general meaning due to the increasing specialization of military occupations that require different areas of knowledge and skill-sets. As a result, 'soldiers' are referred to by names or ranks which reflect an individual's military occupation specialty arm, service, or branch of military employment, their type of unit, or operational employment or technical use such as: trooper, tanker (a member of tank crew), commando, dragoon, infantryman, marine, paratrooper, grenadier, ranger, sniper, engineer, sapper, signaller, medic, or a gunner.

Soldiers is an ABBA song, released on their 1981 album The Visitors. Its working title was "Peasants"

Synopsis

The song is a critique of militarism.

Billboard explains "emphasizing that although there seems to be so little one can do to prevent the machinations of soldiers and those who control them, we must "not look the other way/taking a chance/cos if the bugle starts to play/we too must dance". The Telegraph describes the premise of the song as "how warmongers convince themselves they are noble men".

Composition

The entire song rests upon a "simple two-note" statement". The song has a "string-ensemble synth arrangement". Agnetha uses a "subdued yet stoic vocal", and "the chorus vocals, while typically multi-tiered, are somewhat 'murkier' and less liberated in texture".

Critical reception and analysis

Abba's Abba Gold describes the song as "bleak-yet-catchy".Billboard notes its "simple yet ominous metaphors that envision impending nuclear holocaust". It goes on to explains "the offbeat cadence of the drumming holds dark, somber verses and the sing-song quality of the chorus together", and concludes by saying "certainly very few groups can effectively handle a subject as serious as this, and still imbue it with all the qualities of a great pop song".Billboard listed the song under the "Best cuts" section of an album review, along with four other songs from the album.ABBE: Let The Music Speak says the song has an "unsettling caution" and also "heart and humanity". Full Circle (Drowning Pool album)

Full Circle is the third album from heavy metal band Drowning Pool, released on August 7, 2007. It is their first of two studio releases with Ryan McCombs, then former singer of SOiL, who joined the band after the departure of Jason 'Gong' Jones in 2005. The first single off the album, "Soldiers," is dedicated to the United States Army.

The album debuted at number 64 on the United States Billboard 200, selling about 10,000 copies in its first week. As of September 12, 2007, the album has sold around 29,000 copies in the United States.

Four singles were released to promote the album. The final single "Shame" was released June 29, 2009 almost two years after the album's release. The album wasn't very commercially successful, but was received positively by fans. Drowning Pool embarked on several tours to promote Full Circle.

Writing and recording

Full Circle is the only studio album by Drowning Pool with more than 11 tracks; it has 13. McCombs said that "Shame" was one of his favorite songs from the album. The entire band contributed to the album's writing process, as well as including an outside writer, Nikki Sixx who wrote a song for the band, entitled "Reason I'm Alive", which made it on the album. The album also includes a cover of Billy Idol's song "Rebel Yell".

Rogue (vagrant)

A rogue is a vagrant person who wanders from place to place. Like a drifter, a rogue is an independent person who rejects conventional rules of society in favor of following their own personal goals and values.

In modern English language, the term rogue is used pejoratively to describe a dishonest or unprincipled person whose behavior one disapproves of, but who is nonetheless likeable and/or attractive.

History

The word rogue was first recorded in print in John Awdely's Fraternity of Vagabonds (1561), and then in Thomas Harman's Caveat for Common Cursitors (1566).

In England, the 1572 Vagabonds Act defined a rogue as a person who has no land, no master, and no legitimate trade or source of income; it included rogues in the class of idle vagrants or vagabonds. If a person were apprehended as a rogue, he would be stripped to the waist, whipped until bleeding, and a hole, about the compass of an inch about, would be burned through the cartilage of his right ear with a hot iron. A rogue who was charged with a second offense, unless taken in by someone who would give him work for one year, could face execution as a felony. A rogue charged with a third-offense would only escape death if someone hired him for two years.

Rogue (band)

Rogue were a British pop band who were active between 1975 and 1979, comprising Guy Fletcher, Al Hodge and John Hodkinson.

Band formation

In 1975 Fletcher, former Onyx guitarist Hodge, and former If-vocalist Hodkinson formed the soft-rock trio, Rogue, which released several singles, including "Dedication", "Cool Clear Air", "Lay Me Down", "Lady Put The Light Out", "Too Much Too Soon", "One to One", and "Borderline", as well as three albums. Their song "Fallen Angel" was a No. 12 hit in the Netherlands in January 1976; The band disbanded in 1979.

The band also produced a version of "Dedication" for London's Capital Radio, with the first line: "Capital's our local station."
Their song "Dedication" was covered by the Bay City Rollers on their 1976 album Dedication. Released as a single in the US, it made #60 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Frankie Valli's recording of their song "Fallen Angel" went to No. 11 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1976, before being featured in the Broadway show Jersey Boys.
