Soldier of Fortune is a first-person shooter video game created by Raven Software and published by Activision on February 29, 2000 for Microsoft Windows. It was later released for the PlayStation 2 as well as the Dreamcast, while Loki Software also made a port for Linux. Two sequels were later made to the game as well.
The story involves the theft of nuclear weapons, and the main enemy turns out to be a neo-fascist group based in Germany, led by South African exile Sergei Dekker. At the beginning of the game, terrorists steal four nuclear weapons from a storage facility in Russia, and proceed to sell them to various nations. This is a prelude to the acquisition of advanced weapons of mass destruction by this terrorist group. John Mullins, working for a U.S.-based mercenary ("soldier of fortune") organization known only as "The Shop", and his partner, Aaron "Hawk" Parsons, are assigned to prevent the nukes from falling into the wrong hands, and stop the terrorists in their plans. His missions take him to New York City, Sudan, Siberia, Tokyo, Kosovo, Iraq, Uganda and finally Germany.
Soldier of Fortune is another term for an adventurer or mercenary. It may also refer to:
Soldier of Fortune, Inc. (known by fans as simply "SOF") is a television show created by Dan Gordon which ran for two seasons, from 1997–1999. The series was produced by Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films (the company's first venture into television) and Rysher Entertainment.
The show was about an elite team (composed of mostly former military personnel) who performed "unofficial" missions for the US Government.
During the first season, the show dealt with terrorists and drug lords, and often tackled issues such as patriotism and self-sacrifice.
For the second season, the show was renamed SOF: Special Ops Force. Andrews and Sheppard left the show. Dennis Rodman and David Eigenberg replaced them, though their "hip" characters and new plots led many to abandon the show, leading to its cancellation.
The theme song was performed by Trevor Rabin (of Yes fame). During the second season, an introductory voice-over by an uncredited Peter Graves (a Mission: Impossible alum who never appeared in this series) was added.
Soldier of Fortune is Japanese heavy metal band Loudness' eighth studio album, and their first with American vocalist Mike Vescera. It's the third Loudness album produced by Max Norman after Thunder in the East in 1985 and Lightning Strikes in 1986. The album is co-produced by Fates Warning's producer Roger Probert. Despite the good critical reception and the strong support given by the label, the album failed to chart in the USA.
