Solan district

Solan district is one of the twelve districts of Himachal Pradesh state in northern India. Solan town is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district occupies an area of 1936 km².

History

The territory of the present-day district comprises the territories of the erstwhile princely states of Bhagal, Bhagat, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mangal, Beja, Mahlog, Nalagarh and parts of Keonthal and Kothi and hilly areas of the erstwhile Punjab State which were merged with Himachal Pradesh on 1 November 1966. This district came into existence on 1 September 1972. The district was carved out by amalgamating Solan and Arki tehsils of the erstwhile Mahasu district and Kandaghat and Nalagarh tehsils of the erstwhile Shimla district. Its name comes from Mata Shoolini Devi. It's said that she saved Solan from been destroyed.

Divisions

The district is divided into 4 sub-divisions: Solan, Nalagarh, Arki and Kandaghat. Solan sub-division comprises Solan and Kasauli tehsils. Nalagarh, Arki and Kandaghat sub-divisions comprise Nalagarh, Arki and Kandaghat tehsils respectively.

Solan

Solan is the district headquarters of Solan district (created on 1 September 1972) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The largest Municipal Council of Himachal Pradesh, it is located 46 kilometres (29 mi) south of the state capital, Shimla. At an average elevation of 1,600 metres (5,200 ft). The place is named after the Hindu goddess Shoolini devi. Every year in the month of June, a fair celebrating the goddess is held, featuring a 3-day mela at the central Thoudo grounds. Solan was the capital of the erstwhile princely state, Bhagat.

It is known as the "Mushroom city of India" because of the vast mushroom farming in the area as well as the Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR) situated at Chambaghat. Solan is crowned as the "City of Red Gold", in reference to the bulk production of tomatoes in the area. The town is situated between Chandigarh (joint capital of Punjab and Harayana) and Shimla (state capital), on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway-22. The Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge heritage railway line, built by the British passes through Solan.

Solan is a fictional character in the television series Xena: Warrior Princess, he is played by David Taylor, and later by Nicko Vella.

Biography

He is the Son of Xena and Borias. During Xena's pregnancy with Solan, Alti cursed her unborn child, in order to prevent Xena changing her dark ways as Alti knew that Xena's child would eventually bring Xena back to the light. Xena escaped from Alti. However, the prophecy would later be fulfilled and Solan never knew the love of either of his parents. Shortly after Xena gives birth to him, Borias is killed by Dagnine and a woman named Satrina, Xena's ex-slave. Borias's abandonment and death made Xena eventually realize what a monster she had become. Afraid she would be a bad influence on her child, She gave her newborn son Solan to the centaur Kaleipus, because she believed that he did not deserve a mother like her, and so he would be raised in safety and away from her dangerous influence or a target to her enemies. So, Solan never knew his father, or that the ex-warlord Xena was his mother.
