Soft rock

Soft rock or light rock is a style of music that uses the techniques of rock music (often combined with elements from folk rock) to compose a softer, more toned-down sound.

History

Hard rock had been established as a mainstream genre by 1965. From the end of the 1960s, it became common to divide mainstream rock music into soft and hard rock, with both emerging as major radio formats in the US. Soft rock was often derived from folk rock, using acoustic instruments and putting more emphasis on melody and vocal harmonies. Major artists included Carole King, Cat Stevens, The Hollies, James Taylor and Bread. Soft rock songs generally tend to focus on themes like love, everyday life and relationships. The genre tends to make heavy use of acoustic guitars, pianos, synthesizers and sometimes saxophones. The electric guitars in soft rock are normally faint and high-pitched.

The Carpenters' hit version of "(They Long to Be) Close to You" was released in the summer of 1970, followed by Bread's "Make It with You", both early examples of a softer sound that was coming to dominate the charts. This eventually reached its commercial peak in the mid-to-late 1970s with acts such as Billy Joel, Elton John, Chicago, Toto, Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Air Supply, Seals and Crofts, America and the reformed Fleetwood Mac, whose Rumours (1977) was the best-selling album of the decade. By 1977, some radio stations, like New York's WTFM and WYNY, had switched to an all-soft rock format. By the 1980s, tastes had changed and radio formats reflected this change, including musical artists such as Journey.

Soft Rock (album)

Soft Rock was the last official release by Minneapolis band Lifter Puller. Released in 2002, it was a compilation of nearly all of the band's songs—save those found on their final studio album, Fiestas and Fiascos—and a few other odds and ends. The version of "Lie Down on Landsdowne" contained on Soft Rock differs from that found on Fiascos.

Soft/Rock

"Soft/Rock" is a single released by Lemon Jelly on 21 June 2001. The 7" single was released in two formats; the first was limited to 1,000 copies and released on blue vinyl, each coming in its own hand-stitched denim sleeve with a flavoured condom, the second was also limited to 1,000 copies but released on black vinyl in a black sleeve with a sticker.

The first twelve or so (exact numbers unknown) of the blue vinyl edition were different in design from the others, featuring enhanced embroidery and a business card from the award-winning embroidery artist, Laura Lees. These extremely rare singles were very time-consuming to fabricate, so the design was simplified for the remainder of the format. Therefore the first twelve are highly sought after and occasionally change hands on eBay for several hundred pounds.

The A-side, "Soft", features an uncleared sample from Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" with a vocal track taken from an archive episode of the religious "Pause for Thought" segment of a BBC Radio 2 show. The B-side titled "Rock" contains samples of The Black Crowes version of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle".
