Beautiful Joe
Beautiful Joe was a dog from the town of Meaford, Ontario, whose story inspired the bestselling 1893 novel Beautiful Joe, which contributed to worldwide awareness of animal cruelty.
The real Beautiful Joe
The real Beautiful Joe was an Airedale-type dog. He was medium-sized, brown, and described as likely being part bull terrier and part fox terrier. He was also described as a mongrel, a cur, and a mutt. He was originally owned by a local Meaford man, who cruelly abused the dog to the point of near death, and even cut off his ears and tail. Walter Moore, father of Louise Moore, rescued the dog in 1890, from what likely would have been a violent and painful death. In 1892, Margaret Marshall Saunders (1861–1947), first learned about Beautiful Joe when she visited her brother and his wife, Louise Moore. Saunders was so touched by Joe's story that she wrote a novel-length, fictionalized, autobiographical version of it, entitled Beautiful Joe. Margaret Saunders relocated the story to a small town in Maine and changed the family's name from Moore to Morris to win a literary contest sponsored by the American Humane Education Society. The book was first published in 1893. By 1900, over 800,000 copies sold in the U.S., 40,000 in Canada and 100,000 in the United Kingdom.
Beautiful Joe (film)
Beautiful Joe is a 2000 American-British film written and directed by Stephen Metcalfe. It stars Sharon Stone and Billy Connolly, with supporting roles by Ian Holm, Dann Florek, and Gil Bellows.
Plot
A dying man finds that horses, blondes, and the Mob may end his life faster than cancer. Joe (Billy Connolly) is a regular guy who runs a flower shop and has never had much in the way of good luck. Things seem to be grim for Joe when he's diagnosed with a brain tumor, but a bit of good fortune appears on the horizon when he wins a jackpot at the race track. However, Hush (Sharon Stone), an exotic dancer who has fallen deeply in debt to a gang of thugs, steals Joe's newly won fortune to pay them off. Joe gets his money back by explaining to the gangsters what happened, but only because they mistake him for a syndicate kingpin they've heard about but never met. When the gangsters discover that Joe is a florist and not a career criminal, they find the situation less than amusing.
So Beautiful
"So Beautiful" is a pop song written by Australian singer-songwriter Darren Hayes and Robert Conley. In 2005, the song was released as a single as a part of the promotion of the greatest hits album Truly Madly Completely: The Best of Savage Garden, a band that Hayes was part of until their split in 2001. Hayes was credited on the release as "Darren Hayes (of Savage Garden)".
Background
The song was written for Hayes's boyfriend Richard Cullen, whom he married in a civil partnership ceremony in London on 19 June 2006. The song peaked at number 27 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart. It reached number 8 in Darren Hayes' native Australia. The single itself features a different version of the song that did not feature on the album, produced by Robert Conley. This version resembles Hayes's solo work more than the album version does, which sounds more like Savage Garden's work. The single version of the song contains a different introduction and a slightly faster tempo. The album version also appears in edited form on the UK maxi single as "Spike's Radio Edit" and is the version used for the video. It was produced by Mark "Spike" Stent.
