The Passions were a British post-punk band which formed in 1978 and disbanded in 1983. They were considered one-hit wonders due to their early 1981 single "I'm in Love with a German Film Star".

Career

Based in Shepherds Bush, west London, The Passions' music was grounded mainly in Barbara Gogan's voice and Clive Timperley's delicate Echoplex guitar work. Before forming in 1978, most of the Passions' members had played in other groups. Timperley was formerly with the 101ers, while drummer Richard Williams and singer/guitarist Barbara Gogan were in the punk rock outfit The Derelicts. The Passions' first single, issued in March 1979, was "Needles and Pills" (written by Dack Dyde), which assisted in gaining the band a recording contract with Fiction Records.

Michael & Miranda, the band's debut album, was released in 1980. Singles "Hunted" and "The Swimmer" were followed by their major charting song, "I'm in Love with a German Film Star". Before "The Swimmer" was issued, Bidwell and Barker left the band, the former joining The Wall. David Agar took over bass guitar duties. The band's second album, 30,000 Feet Over China, was released in August 1981, including previously released A-sides and several brand new recordings.

Small talk

Small talk is an informal type of discourse that does not cover any functional topics of conversation or any transactions that need to be addressed.

Small talk is conversation for its own sake. The phenomenon of small talk was initially studied in 1923 by Bronisław Malinowski, who coined the term "phatic communication" to describe it. The ability to conduct small talk is a social skill; hence, small talk is some type of social communication. Early publications assume networked work positions as suitable for social communication.

Purpose

In spite of seeming to have little useful purpose, small talk is a bonding ritual and a strategy for managing interpersonal distance. It serves many functions in helping to define the relationships between friends, work colleagues, and new acquaintances. In particular, it helps new acquaintances to explore and categorize each other's social position. Small talk is closely related to the need for people to maintain positive face — to feel approved-of by those who are listening to them. It lubricates social interactions in a very flexible way, although the desired function is often dependent on the point in the conversation at which the small talk occurs:

Small Talk is the debut album by British pop band Twenty Twenty. It was released for pre-order on 7 March 2011 before its general release on 25 April 2011. It charted at 26 in the UK on 9 May 2011. The first single from the album was Love to Life which peaked at number 60 in the UK when released on 17 April 2011.
