SMALL

SMALL, Small Machine Algol Like Language, is a programming language developed by Dr. Nevil Brownlee of Auckland University.

History

The aim of the language was to enable people to write ALGOL-like code that ran on a small machine. It also included the string type for easier text manipulation.

SMALL was used extensively from about 1980 to 1985 at Auckland University as a programming teaching aid, and for some internal projects. Originally written to run on a Burroughs Corporation B6700 Main frame in Fortran IV, subsequently rewritten in SMALL and ported to a DEC PDP-10 Architecture (on the Operating System TOPS-10) and IBM S360 Architecture (on the Operating System VM/CMS).

About 1985, SMALL had some object-oriented features added to handle structures (that were missing from the early language), and to formalise file manipulation operations.

  • Minori, Campania

Minori is a town and a comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of southwestern Italy, situated on the Amalfi Coast. It is the site of the well-preserved ruins of a Roman villa, which are open for public viewing.

    Etymology

The origin of the name, Minori (meaning small), comes from its association in the past with the river that courses through it, La Rheggina. The ancient Latin name for the town was, Rheggina Minor. This name coincided with the ancient name of the neighboring village, Maiori (meaning large), then known as Rheggina Maior, because of the same association.

In time, the names of both of the towns have become abbreviated. Rheggina Minor now is known simply as, Minori.

Chef Gennaro Contaldo was born in Minori .

    Main sights

  • Basilica di Santa Trofimena - Saint Trofimena was a young Sicilian martyr. She is known by several names, and possibly may be related to a myth about the siren Parthenope. Legend says that her body was placed in an urn and thrown into the sea. The urn was carried by currents until it washed onto the beach at Minori. The people who found it used a team of small white heifers to carry it to the location where locals built temple to honour the martyr.
  • Minori (train)

The Minori (みのり) was a Limited express train service in Japan operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) between Niigata and Takada on the Shinetsu Main Line in Niigata Prefecture between March 1997 and 2002.

    Rolling stock

Services were formed of Niigata-based 4- and 6-car 485 series EMUs.

    History

The Minori services commenced from the start of the revised timetable on 22 March 1997, with one working in each direction daily.

Services were increased to three workings in each direction daily from 1 October 1997, with two services in each direction operating between Niigata and Nagano, absorbing earlier Akakura express services and coinciding with the opening of the Nagano Shinkansen. Services to and from Nagano were subsequently cut back due to poor loadings, reduced to two workings in each direction daily between Niigata and Takada from 1 December 2001. The Minori services were discontinued from the start of the revised timetable on 1 December 2002, being replaced by new Kubikino rapid services operating between Niigata and Arai.

    Revenge

Revenge is a form of primitive justice usually assumed to be enacted in the absence of the norms of formal law and jurisprudence. Often, revenge is defined as being a harmful action against a person or group in response to a grievance, be it real or perceived. It is used to right a wrong by going outside of the law. This is because the individual taking revenge feels as though the law will not do justice. Revenge is also known as payback, retribution, retaliation or vengeance; it may be characterized as a form of justice (not to be confused with retributive justice), an altruistic action which enforces societal or moral justice aside from the legal system. Francis Bacon described it as a kind of "wild justice" that "does... offend the law [and] putteth the law out of office". Primitive justice or retributive justice is often differentiated from more formal and refined forms of justice such as distributive justice and theological justice.

    Function in society

Detractors argue that revenge is simply wrong, of the same design as "two wrongs make a right".
