Small (journal)

Small is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal. Established in 2005 as a monthly journal, it switched to biweekly in 2009. It publishes research in science and technology on the micro- and nanoscales in the form of Communications, Reviews, Concepts, Highlights, Essays, and Full Papers. The journal was co-founded by Chad Mirkin and Peter Gölitz. The editorial office is in Weinheim, Germany.

SMALL

SMALL, Small Machine Algol Like Language, is a programming language developed by Dr. Nevil Brownlee of Auckland University.

History

The aim of the language was to enable people to write ALGOL-like code that ran on a small machine. It also included the string type for easier text manipulation.

SMALL was used extensively from about 1980 to 1985 at Auckland University as a programming teaching aid, and for some internal projects. Originally written to run on a Burroughs Corporation B6700 Main frame in Fortran IV, subsequently rewritten in SMALL and ported to a DEC PDP-10 Architecture (on the Operating System TOPS-10) and IBM S360 Architecture (on the Operating System VM/CMS).

About 1985, SMALL had some object-oriented features added to handle structures (that were missing from the early language), and to formalise file manipulation operations.

Bump (application)

Bump! was an iOS and Android application that enabled smartphone users to transfer contact information, photos and files between devices. In 2011, it was #8 on Apple's list of all-time most popular free iPhone apps, and by February 2013 it had been downloaded 125 million times. Its developer, Bump Technologies, shut down the service and discontinued the app on January 31, 2014, after being acquired by Google for Android Beam.

Functionality

Bump sends contact information, photos and files to another device over the internet. Before activating the transfer, each user confirms what he or she wants to send to the other user. To initiate a transfer, two people physically bump their phones together. A screen appears on both users' smartphone displays, allowing them to confirm what they want to send to each other. When two users bump their phones, software on the phones send a variety of sensor data to an algorithm running on Bump servers, which includes the location of the phone, accelerometer readings, IP address, and other sensor readings. The algorithm figures out which two phones felt the same physical bump and then transfers the information between those phones. Bump makes transfers through software, in contrast to devices with Near Field Communication (NFC) chips, which transfer data through software and hardware.

Baby Blue (rapper)

Baby Blue is an English rapper and singer in London, England. She is known for her work with singer Estelle and collaborations with John Legend, Madness, Sway, Shystie, Ms. Dynamite and Lady Sovereign. Baby Blue has a sound that fuses hip hop with grime, R&B and soul.

Biography

Baby Blue started rapping while at school and eventually recorded a track called 'I Woulda', which was inspired by her cousin's gang-related death in the US. The track received heavy rotation and was the start of Baby Blue's career as a recording artist. When she was 19 she sent her music to UK artist Estelle, who immediately invited Baby Blue to New York to record the song 'Hey Girl' featuring John Legend, as well as 'Don't Talk', another track for Estelle's début album The 18th Day, which was certified gold in the UK and she was also featured rapping in the video for the hit top 20 track 1980.

Later that year, Blue released the mixtape 'Out of the Blue Vol I' (with Volume II released two years later) which featured Estelle, members of So Solid Crew, Shystie, Sway, and Akala. Her first solo music video was for the single 'Sometimes,' which was released to push Vol II of the mixtape. This led Mobo Magazine to dub her "The Uncrowned Queen of the UK" and MTV to list her as "one of the hottest up 'n' coming stars".
