Ignite!

Ignite! Learning, Inc. is an educational software and hardware company co-founded in 1999 by Texas businessman Neil Bush and a year later Ken Leonard. Neil is a brother of Former President George W. Bush and Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, and son of former President George Herbert Walker Bush. Alan Davis resigned as the President and CEO in November, 2009. Ken Leonard is the current acting CEO.

Ignite! Learning offers middle school curricula in social studies, science, and mathematics. The company's instructional design is based on constructivism, differentiated instruction, and Howard Gardner's writing on multiple intelligences to appeal to multiple learning styles.

Finances

To fund Ignite!, Neil Bush and others raised $23 million from U.S. investors, including his parents, Barbara Bush and George H.W. Bush, as well as businessmen from Taiwan, Japan, Kuwait, the British Virgin Islands and the United Arab Emirates, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. As of 2006, at least $2 million had come from Taiwanese interests that had given Neil Bush a job consulting for a semiconductor manufacturer, and at least $3 million came from Saudi interests. A foundation linked to Reverend Sun Myung Moon donated $1 million for a research project by the company in Washington, D.C.-area schools.

Ignite (Shihad album)

Ignite is the eighth studio album by Shihad and was released on 20 September 2010 in New Zealand and 24 September 2010 in Australia. Ignite debuted at number one on the New Zealand Music Chart, eventually achieving gold sales there.

Lead single "Sleepeater" is featured in Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 video game.

Critical reception

Scott Kara from The New Zealand Herald gave Ignite four out of five stars, praising the Shihad's heavy and potent music.The Dominion Post's Lindsay Davis lauded its "raw, dirtier sound" rating the album three-and-a-half out of five stars. Nick Ward of The Nelson Mail gave it four out of five stars, commending the maturity and versatility of the band.

Commercial reception

Ignite debuted on the New Zealand Albums Chart at number one on 27 September 2010, which made Shihad the first New Zealand band to have four albums debut at number one. The album also appeared on the Australian Albums Chart at number forty-four on 10 October 2010.

Slowdown

A slowdown is an industrial action in which employees perform their duties but seek to reduce productivity or efficiency in their performance of these duties. A slowdown may be used as either a prelude or an alternative to a strike, as it is seen as less disruptive as well as less risky and costly for workers and their union. Striking workers usually go unpaid and risk being replaced, so a slowdown is seen as a way to put pressure on management while avoiding these outcomes. Other times slowdowns are accompanied by intentional sabotage on the part of workers to provide further disruption.

Nonetheless, workers participating in a slowdown are often punished, sometimes by firing and other times by law.

At Ford's plant in Dagenham, UK, during the 1970s, workers introduced a slowdown after Ford management increased the production line speed from 18 to 21 feet per minute. This was a second speed increase and workers felt that this was unfair. After a slowdown by production line staff, Ford management reduced the line speed back to 18 feet per minute.

Slowdown (venue)

Slowdown is an entertainment venue located at 729 North 14 Street in NoDo, a new development near the Near North Side neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska. A combination of a live music venue, shops, restaurants and apartments, the venue was developed by Saddle Creek Records as a direct competitor to the Sokol Auditorium in Little Bohemia. Slowdown is said to be "unlike anything in Omaha - or the Midwest" because of its comprehensive, mixed-use design. The venue is named after the group Slowdown Virginia, who have had a strong influence on "The Omaha Sound".

History

Slowdown began in 2000 as an idea to start a rock club. Jason Kulbel and Robb Nansel started with the idea to renovate a space somewhere in the downtown area and give Omaha the permanent music venue they felt it was lacking. As it became apparent that the perfect space for renovation was just not out there, Robb and Jason spent most of their time working on the expansion of Saddle Creek Records. In 2004, they decided that the renovation of an old space was never going to be ideal and started looking around for some land to buy. The intention now was to build a permanent home for both Slowdown and Saddle Creek.
