Slapshot

A slapshot (also spelled as slap shot) in ice hockey is the hardest shot one can perform. It has four stages which are executed in one fluid motion to make the puck fly into the net:

  • The player winds up his hockey stick to shoulder height or higher.
  • Next the player violently "slaps" the ice slightly behind the puck and uses his weight to bend the stick, storing energy in it like a spring. This bending of the stick gives the slapshot its amazing speed. Just like a bow and arrow, the stick's tendency to return to being straight is transferred to the puck, giving it much more speed than just hitting it alone could.
  • When the face of the stick blade strikes the puck, the player rolls his wrists and shifts his weight so that the energy stored in the stick is released through the puck.
  • Finally, the player follows through, ending up with the stick pointed towards the desired target.
  • The slapshot is harder than other shots and, because of the violent motion involved, somewhat less accurate. It also takes longer to execute; a player usually cannot take a slapshot while under any significant pressure from an opposing player because the opponent could easily interfere during the windup. The slapshot is most commonly used by a defenceman at the point, especially during a power play, although a forward will sometimes find an opportunity to use it.

    Slap Shot (film)

Slap Shot is a 1977 comedy film directed by George Roy Hill, written by Nancy Dowd and starring Paul Newman and Michael Ontkean. It depicts a minor league hockey team that resorts to violent play to gain popularity in a declining factory town.

    Plot

Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) is the aging player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs hockey team in the fictional Federal League. A perennial loser for years, the team's manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) has resorted to extreme cost-cutting techniques and embarrassing promotional antics to keep local interest alive. Dunlop, while not particularly talented as either a player or coach, is a skilled con man, and regularly manipulates the team to his own advantage. During a hopeless season, the Chiefs pick up the Hanson Brothers, bespectacled violent goons with childlike mentalities, complete with toys in their luggage. Horrified at being given players who seem stupid, immature, and unreliable, Dunlop initially chooses not to play them.

    Slapshot (mascot)

Slapshot is the official mascot for the Washington Capitals of the NHL.

    Biography

Slapshot was unveiled on November 18, 1995. He is a large bald eagle who wears the number 00. He was first introduced to home fans by Stephanie Williams, a 5th Grader from Fairfax Station, VA who won a naming contest for the new mascot.

Slapshot can be seen at every home game and is often joined by secondary mascots, Air Slapshot and Hat Trick. He makes hundreds of appearances each year in the Maryland, Virginia and DC region soaring into charity fundraisers, community festivals and parades. He has also performed across the country and was recently seen on The Price Is Right.

Slapshot often dons different costumes, such as Santa during the holidays and as the President to commemorate when the Washington Capitals won the Presidents' Trophy. Slapshot also has a pretty big rivalry with the Carolina Hurricanes mascot Stormy.

    Kill For A Drink

    by: Slapshot

You'd sell your soul for a drink right now
You've got no money so you don't know how
You've lost your wife and you want her back
But the bottle's there is no turning back
    You've lost your mind
    You've lost your pride
    You've lost your strength
    You've lost your wife
    You've lost your car
    You've lost your job
    You've lost your life
But you'd still kill for drink right now
You try to work but it is always there
On your coffee break you grab a beer
You want to stop but you want it more
Look what your children see you for
    You've lost your mind
    You've lost your pride
    You've lost your strength
    You've lost your wife
    You've lost your car
    You've lost your job
    You've lost your life
