Sky King was an American radio and TV series. Its lead character was Arizona rancher and aircraft pilot Schuyler "Sky" King. The series may have been based on a true-life personality of the 1930s, Jack Cones, the "Flying Constable" of Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County, California, although this notion is unverified.
The series had strong western elements. King usually captured criminals and spies and found lost hikers--though he did so with the use of his airplane, the Songbird. The airplanes flown by King changed during the course of the TV series, but were still known as the Songbird, although the number was not given for the last model assigned to this role.
King and his niece Penny (and sometimes Clipper, his nephew) lived on the Flying Crown Ranch, near the fictitious town of Grover, Arizona. Penny and Clipper were also pilots, although they were inexperienced and looked to their uncle for guidance. Penny was an accomplished air racer, rated as a multiengine pilot, whom Sky trusted to fly the Songbird. In the third TV episode, Penny referred to Clipper as "my brother."
Songbird Airways (formerly Sky King) is a charter airline based in Orlando, Florida. Sky King was founded in July 1990 to fly for the NBA's Sacramento Kings. Sky King operated flights from Florida to Cuba on behalf of Customer Service Providers (CSPs). Sky King also conducted flights of deportees to undisclosed destinations on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In the past, the airline provided charter service to sports teams and businesses using Boeing 737 aircraft sporting various seat configurations. The airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 9, 2010, after it was unable to meet the payment demands of one of its largest creditors, fuel supplier Mercury Air Group. It filed for bankruptcy again in 2012.
Sky King emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 3, 2014 upon confirmation by the United States Bankruptcy Court of the Trustee's Plan of Reorganization. Sky King was acquired by AerLine Holdings LLC on October 24, 2014. Service was resumed on December 22, 2014 after the United States Department of Transportation found the carrier "fit, willing and able" to resume service with up to ten aircraft.
