Sky 1 (marketed as Sky 1 HD) is the flagship channel operated and owned by Sky plc. It is the general entertainment channel operated in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Sky 1 launched across Europe on 26 April 1982 as Satellite Television and is the oldest non-terrestrial TV channel in the United Kingdom. In the UK, the channel is available via digital satellite on Sky, digital cable on Virgin Media, IPTV on TalkTalk TV and online via Sky Go. In Ireland, the channel is available via Sky Ireland, Virgin Media Ireland and eVision.
Sky 1 listings include some very popular broadcasts—many imported from North America—including 24, Battlestar Galactica, Bones, Caprica, Fringe, Glee, House, Lie to Me, Lost, Prison Break, The Simpsons, Stargate (SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe), Touch, and WWE Smackdown. The Head of Sky 1 is Adam MacDonald.
Sky 1 started on 26 April 1982 as Satellite Television Ltd, and was Europe's first ever cable and satellite channel, originally broadcasting from the Orbital Test Satellite aimed to cable operators all over Europe; At first the station struggled financially, due to disappointing ratings in the countries in which it was officially available, which in turn led to insufficient advertising revenue and increasing difficulty in covering the high transmission costs.
The Box is a television channel in New Zealand available on Sky Television.
The channel's shows are a variety of the most recent shows from the United States, for example CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Simpsons, Family Guy, WWE's hit shows, and Stargate: SG-1. Some shows are already screened on Free to air TV & the BOX will play older episodes of the show.
The channel was started in November 1994 as Orange on SKY UHF pre-set channel 7. Orange broadcast during prime-time and during 1995 Juice TV began broadcasting overnight when Orange went off the air. In 1997, Cartoon Network began broadcasting between 6am and 4:30pm while Orange was not broadcasting.
Orange changed its name to SKY 1 in 1998 and the channel began broadcasting 24 hours a day when the SKY Digital service was launched however the UHF channel continued to screen Cartoon Network during the day time and in 2000 this was replaced with Nickelodeon.
In 2005, SKY Network Television considered unencrypting SKY 1 to make it a free-to-air channel, but decided instead to purchase the existing network, Prime.
