Skirt!

skirt! is a nationally and locally branded website, magazine and book publishing company all about women. They currently publish in 44 markets both digitally and in print.

History

skirt! was founded in 1994 by Nikki Hardin, a freelance writer living off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. Longing to have something to read that reflected her life and the lives of the women she knew, she decided to start a magazine.

Hardin began skirt! with $400 and the support of her friends. She had no business plan, no collateral, and no experience in the magazine industry. She wanted a publication that had essays on women's issues, not recipes and fashion. A publication that spoke to all sides of a woman's personality.

In 2003, Hardin sold skirt! to Morris Communications in Augusta, Georgia. The magazine and website have local editions in several other cities of the Southeastern United States, and appears as a weekly insert in the Florida Times-Union. She remained as publisher.

Hardin started skirt! books, an imprint of the Morris Communications' Globe Pequot Press. It publishes only women's non-fiction books, such as: Bahr, Iris (2011). Skirt

A skirt is a tube- or cone-shaped garment that hangs from the waist or hips and covers all or part of the legs.

The hemline of skirts can vary from micro to floor-length and can vary according to cultural conceptions of modesty and aesthetics as well as the wearer's personal taste, which can be influenced by such factors as fashion and social context. Most skirts are self-standing garments, but some skirt-looking panels may be part of another garment such as leggings, shorts, and swimsuits.

In the western world, skirts are more commonly worn by women; with some exceptions such as the izaar which is worn by Muslim cultures and the kilt which is a traditional men's garment in Scotland and Ireland. Some fashion designers, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, have shown men's skirts. Other cultures traditionally wear skirts.

At its simplest, a skirt can be a draped garment made out of a single piece of material (such as pareos), but most skirts are fitted to the body at the waist or hips and fuller below, with the fullness introduced by means of darts, gores, pleats, or panels. Modern skirts are usually made of light to mid-weight fabrics, such as denim, jersey, worsted, or poplin. Skirts of thin or clingy fabrics are often worn with slips to make the material of the skirt drape better and for modesty.

"Skirt" is a song by Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue, co-written by The-Dream, Chris Elliot, Chris Lake and Minogue herself and produced by Elliot, known as Nom De Strip. It was released exclusively through Beatport as a remix EP on 24 June 2013 by Rising Music as a promotional single for Minogue's twelfth studio album, Kiss Me Once; however, it was not included on the album. "Skirt" is a dance-pop song heavily influenced by elements of dubstep, house & hip hop. It was named as one of the "Top 50 Game-Changing EDM Tracks of 2013" by American publication, Billboard, at number 36.

Background and release

In early 2012 DJ Bones and producer Nom de Strip teamed up to release the track "Shake & Bake". A year later the original track was used to create a new song. "Skirt" was written by Chris Elliot, Chris Lake, Kylie Minogue and The-Dream and produced by Elliot aka Nom De Strip. The song was first released via streaming service SoundCloud by the production duo Nom de Strip on Minogue's 45th birthday. On 14 June 2013, it was revealed that the song was as a promotional single by Minogue's management Roc Nation. On 24 June 2013 the song was released for digital download exclusively through electronic music digital download service Beatport. In a radio interview on 25 June 2013 on SoundCheck, Minogue stated that the song is a buzz single for her twelfth studio album, Kiss Me Once.
