Sins (film)

Sins is a 2005 Bollywood film directed and produced by Vinod Pande.

The movie has a few controversial topless scenes due to which the movie received an A certificate from the censor board of India. The film depicting a Catholic priest romantically involved with a young woman, was protested against by those that felt it was a negative portrayal of Catholicism and indecent. Catholic Secular Forum filed a public interest litigation to stall its release but the court cleared the film.

The film is based on news story that Pande read in 1988 about a Kerala priest sentenced to death on sexual harassment and murder charges.

Sin

In a religious context, sin is the act of violating God's will. Sin can also be viewed as anything that violates the ideal relationship between an individual and God; or as any diversion from the perceived ideal order for human living. To sin has been defined as "to miss the mark".

Etymology

The word derives from "Old English syn(n), for original *sunjō... The stem may be related to that of Latin sons, sont-is guilty. In Old English there are examples of the original general sense, ‘offence, wrong-doing, misdeed'". The Biblical terms translated from New Testament Greek (αμαρτία - amartia) and from Hebrew as "sin" or "syn" originate in archery and literally refer to missing the "gold" at the centre of a target, but hitting the target, i.e. error. (Archers call not hitting the target at all a "miss".)

Bahá'í

In the Bahá'í Faith, humans are considered naturally good (perfect), fundamentally spiritual beings. Human beings were created because of God's immeasurable love. However, the Bahá'í teachings compare the human heart to a mirror, which, if turned away from the light of the sun (i.e. God), is incapable of receiving God's love.

Sins (miniseries)

Sins is a 1986 CBS television miniseries starring Joan Collins. An adaptation of the 1982 novel of the same name by Judith Gould, it is the story of a woman who survives the horrors of the Nazi occupation of France and suffers a succession of challenges as she rises in the world of fashion.

Produced by New World Television, Collins also served as executive producer with her then-husband Peter Holm, and the miniseries contained 85 costume changes for her role (a record for a single production). Carly Simon co-wrote and performed the theme song, "It's Hard to be Tender."

Plot

Helene Junot is a successful businesswoman and a leading name in the world of fashion. In 1980s New York, she attends a reception for the launch of her new magazine, Woman Of Today, which could make or break her publishing company. Meanwhile, several people from Helene's past are conspiring to destroy her.

In France during World War II, 13-year-old Helene is raped and brutalized at the hands of the Gestapo (led by the sadistic Nazi commander, Karl Von Eiderfeld) as they murder her pregnant mother, caught sending messages for the Allied Forces. Though Helene later escapes, her younger brother and sister, Edmund and Marie, are deported to a concentration camp. In 1949, with the war over, Helene goes to work as a dressmaker with her aunt at the grand home of the Count and Countess De Ville. There, she begins to show her talents as a fashion designer and also is wooed by the Count's son, Hubert. However, Hubert's parents do not approve of him seeing a "servant girl", which ends their romance.

Sins, Aargau

Sins is a municipality in the district of Muri in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland.

Geography

Sins has an area, as of 2009, of 20.3 square kilometers (7.8 sq mi). Of this area, 14.64 km² (5.65 sq mi) or 72.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.54 km² (1.37 sq mi) or 17.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.95 km² (0.75 sq mi) or 9.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.1 km² (25 acres) or 0.5% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km² (2.5 acres) or 0.0% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.3% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 4.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.8%. Out of the forested land, 16.3% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.2% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 45.3% is used for growing crops and 24.8% is pastures, while 2.0% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.

Lubrication theory

In fluid dynamics, lubrication theory describes the flow of fluids (liquids or gases) in a geometry in which one dimension is significantly smaller than the others. An example is the flow above air hockey tables, where the thickness of the air layer beneath the puck is much smaller than the dimensions of the puck itself.

Internal flows are those where the fluid is fully bounded. Internal flow lubrication theory has many industrial applications because of its role in the design of fluid bearings. Here a key goal of lubrication theory is to determine the pressure distribution in the fluid volume, and hence the forces on the bearing components. The working fluid in this case is often termed a lubricant.

Free film lubrication theory is concerned with the case in which one of the surfaces containing the fluid is a free surface. In that case the position of the free surface is itself unknown, and one goal of lubrication theory is then to determine this. Surface tension may then be significant, or even dominant. Issues of wetting and dewetting then arise. For very thin films (thickness less than one micrometre), additional intermolecular forces, such as Van der Waals forces or disjoining forces, may become significant.
