Signs (journal)

Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society is a peer-reviewed feminist academic journal. It was established in 1975 by Catharine R. Stimpson, and is published quarterly by the University of Chicago Press.

Scope

Signs publishes essays examining women's and men's lives around the globe from both historical and contemporary perspectives, as well as theoretical and critical articles addressing processes of racialization, sexualization, and gendering. In 2015, Signs launched the "Feminist Public Intellectuals Project," which seeks to engage feminist theorizing with pressing political and social problems via three open-access, online-first initiatives: "Short Takes," "Currents," and "Ask a Feminist." Given the fragmentation of feminist activism and the persistent negative freighting of the moniker “feminist,” the "Feminist Public Intellectuals Project" seeks to genuinely reimagine what role a journal can play in provoking activism.

History

From 1975-1980, the founding editor-in-chief of Signs was Catharine R. Stimpson (Barnard College). From 1980-1985, the editor-in-chief was Barbara C. Gelpi (Stanford University). From 1985-1990, the editor-in-chief was Jean Fox O'Barr (Duke University). She was succeeded from 1990-1995 by Ruth-Ellen Boetcher Joeres and Barbara Laslett (University of Minnesota). From 1995-2000, the editors-in-chief were Carolyn Allen and Judith A. Howard (University of Washington), they were replaced in 2000 by Sandra Harding and Kathryn Norberg (University of California, Los Angeles), they served until 2005 when they were replaced by Mary Hawkesworth (Rutgers University). Since 2015, Suzanna Danuta Walters (Northeastern University) has been editor-in-chief. The journal was called "prestigious" in a French review article of women's studies in America.

The Journal is a daily newspaper produced in Newcastle upon Tyne. Published by ncjMedia, (a division of Trinity Mirror), The Journal is produced every weekday and Saturday morning and is complemented by its sister publications the Evening Chronicle and the Sunday Sun.

The newspaper mainly has a middle-class and professional readership throughout North East England, covering a mixture of regional, national and international news. It also has a daily business section and sports page as well as the monthly Culture magazine and weekly property supplement Homemaker.

News coverage about farming is also an important part of the paper with a high readership in rural Northumberland.

It was the named sponsor of Tyne Theatre on Westgate Road during the 2000s, until January 2012.

The first edition of the Newcastle Journal was printed on 12 May 1832, and subsequent Saturdays, by Hernaman and Perring, 69 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle. On 12 May 2007, The Journal celebrated its 175th Anniversary and 49,584th issue.

Journal (1977 TV series)

Journal is a Canadian short film television series which aired on CBC Television in 1977.

Premise

Independent short films were featured in this series. For example, Spence Bay was created in their northern community by a group of secondary school students and their teacher. Other films included Peggy Peacock and Jock Mlynek's North Hatley Antique Sale and Quebec Village; Mark Irwin's The Duel - Fencing, For The Love Of A Horse, Lacrosse, Sailaway, and Step By Step; and Tony Hall's Serpent River Paddlers.

This series was unrelated to CBC's news and current affairs series The Journal.

Scheduling

This 15-minute series was broadcast Sundays at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern) from 15 May to 25 September 1977.

Signs (Bloc Party song)

"Signs" is the first single from Intimacy Remixed, the remix album to Bloc Party's third album Intimacy. The song's remix by Armand Van Helden was released on 27 April 2009 in the United Kingdom only on digital download and 12" vinyl. It is the first single to be released from a Bloc Party remix album as no songs were released from the previous effort Silent Alarm Remixed.

Musical style

Paul Cook of godisinthetvzine.co.uk stated that the remixed version of "Signs" does "away with the xylophone intro and delicate layering of vocals and instrumentals" of the original version by "wedging in a thick, house bassline. Cook also commented that this change "hasn't done this track any favours" and that the song "is far from inventive or experimental in its production". Simon Taylor of angryape.com offered a differing opinion, stating that "Helden rips up the dancefloor with his rework - all grinding synths, bouncy basslines and booming beats" to create a remix that "will appeal to clubbers and indie fans in equal measure", evoking the success of one Bloc Party's earlier singles, "Banquet".

Signs (film)

Signs is a 2002 American science fiction thriller-horror film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Executive producers for the film comprised Shyamalan, Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy and Sam Mercer. A joint collective effort to commit to the film's production was made by Blinding Edge Pictures and The Kennedy/Marshall Company. It was commercially distributed by Touchstone Pictures theatrically, and by Touchstone Home Entertainment in home media format.

The story focuses on a former Episcopal priest named Graham Hess, played by Mel Gibson, who discovers a series of crop circles in his cornfield. Hess slowly becomes convinced that the phenomena are a result of extraterrestrial life. It also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, and Abigail Breslin. Signs explores faith, kinship, and extraterrestrials.

Following its premiere in theatres nationwide on August 2, 2002, the film grossed $227,966,634 in domestic ticket receipts screening at 3,453 theatres during its widest release. It earned an additional $180,281,283 in business through international release, to top out at a combined $408,247,917 in gross revenue. The film was nominated for multiple awards, including those from the Online Film Critics Society and the Empire Awards. The film also won an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
