Sheopur district

Sheopur District (Hindi: श्योपुर जिला) is a district of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. The district is located in the north of the state and forms part of Chambal Division.

The town of Sheopur is the district headquarters. Other towns include Bijeypur, Karahal and Badoda. The district has a population of 559,495 (2001 census) and covers an area of 6606 km².

As of 2011, its population is 687,952 and it is the third least populous district of Madhya Pradesh (out of 50), after Harda and Umaria.

It is one out of 21 tribal district of Madhya Pradesh.

History

Sheopur district was carved out of morena District in 1998.

Economy

In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Sheopur one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640). It is one of the 24 districts in Madhya Pradesh currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).

Divisions

The district comprises three sub-divisions: Sheopur, Vijaypur and Karahal. Sheopur sub-division consists two tehsils: Sheopur and Baroda. Vijaypur sub-division also comprises two tehsils: Vijaypur and Veerpur. Karahal sub-division comprises the lone tehsil of Karahal. There are two nagar palikas in this district: Sheopur and Baroda and a nagar panchayat, Vijaypur.

Sheopur

Sheopur is a city in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is the administrative headquarters of Sheopur District. Sheopur is linked by rail to Gwalior. The town is traditionally famous for its wood carving. This is the western most town of Madhya Pradesh, Chambal River is just 25 km, which forms the boundary between Rajasthan and MP states.

Sheopur can be reached via train and buses from Gwalior which is 240 km from Sheopur.Sheopur is located at northern part of Madhya Pradesh. Some of the main locations are Vijaipur, Karahal and Badoda. Major tourist attraction is Palpur (kuno) wildlife sanctuary. The well-known Kaketa reservoir is located in this district. The art of woodcarving has flourished in district Sheopur and the beautifully embellished wooden ceilings, doors and lintels with finely carved designs are silent testimonials of its glory. The wood carvers of Sheopur, with great sensitivity and skill transform different varieties of wood. The crafts persons of Sheopur make pipes, masks, toys, doors, stands, windows, wooden memorials, flower vases, bedposts and cradle posts etc.

Sheopur (Vidhan Sabha constituency)

Sheopur Vidhan Sabha constituency (Hindi: श्योपुर विधान सभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र) is one of the 230 Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) constituencies of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. This constituency came into existence in 1951, as Sheopur Pohri, one of the 79 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the erstwhile Madhya Bharat state.

Overview

Sheopur (constituency number 1) is one of the two Vidhan Sabha constituencies located in Sheopur district. This constituency covers the entire Sheopur sub-division.

Sheopur is part of Morena Lok Sabha constituency along with seven other Vidhan Sabha segments, namely, Vijaypur in this district and Sabalgarh, Joura, Sumawali, Morena, Dimani and Ambah in Morena district.
