Shamli district

Shamli (formerly Prabudh Nagar) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This district was carved out from M.Nagar District on 28 September 2011 as Prabudh Nagar and renamed Shamli in July 2012. Shamli is the headquarters of the district. Shamli is located approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Delhi along the Delhi–Saharanpur highway. The district lies in the fertile Doab region and hence the major occupation is agriculture. The district is known for its sugar mills and supplies sugar to neighbouring areas.

History

The area was prominent during the first struggle for freedom against the East India Company in 1857, but the British army later recaptured the area. The town also witnessed important wars such as the first, second and third Battles of Panipat, and the battles during the rise of the Sikhs.

The district was also at the centre of the successful Green Revolution that helped India become self-sufficient in food production and gave the country confidence during the years after the end of British occupation. the good shamli.

Shamli is a historical city and district headquarters in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and a major centre of the Sugar and Jaggery in Western Uttar Pradesh, also commonly known as the Upper Doab region. Shamli is located at 29°27′N 77°19′E / 29.45°N 77.32°E / 29.45; 77.32. It has an average elevation of 248 metres (814 ft).

Demographics

Provisional data from the 2011 census shows that Shamli has a population of 107,233, of which 57,236 are male and 49,997 are female. The literacy rate is 81.97 per cent.

Shamli (Hindi: शामली) is one of the 403 constituencies of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, India. It is a part of the Shamli district (prior to 2012, Shamli was a part of Muzaffarnagar district) and one of the five assembly constituencies in the Kairana (Lok Sabha constituency). First assembly election in this assembly constituency was conducted in 2012 after the constituency came into existence in the year 2008 as a result of the "Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008".
