Shamir Bailey (born November 7, 1994), known simply as Shamir, is an American singer and songwriter from Las Vegas, Nevada. His debut extended play (EP), Northtown, was released in June 2014 to positive reviews. In October 2014 he signed to XL Recordings and released the single "On the Regular". His debut LP Ratchet was released on May 19, 2015 in the United States.

Early life

Shamir grew up in North Las Vegas, an area that he has called "cookie-cutter suburban." He was raised as a Muslim but describes himself as "more spiritual than religious, I don't believe in god per se, I kind of feel like god is the universe." Shamir is genderqueer, informing an interviewer in 2015 that "I don't identify as gay because I don't identify as male or female",. Although he does not have a preferred pronoun, he is comfortable with male pronouns, and "never really got" singular they.

His aunt was in the music business and lived with Shamir and his mother. Bass players and producers were guests at the family's home, helping his aunt with her songs. His parents and aunt introduced him to a wide range of music, including hip-hop, R&B, Outkast, Groove Theory, and singers like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Janis Joplin. At age nine, Shamir received an Epiphone guitar, and began writing music.

Shamir, Israel

Shamir (Hebrew: שָׁמִיר) is a kibbutz in Upper Galilee area of Israel. Located on the western slopes of the Golan Heights, it falls under the jurisdiction of Upper Galilee Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 608.

History

The kibbutz was established in 1944 by a small group of mainly Romanian immigrants. The first-generation settlers were members of the Marxist Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair.

Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War the UN-established border between Israel and Syria was drawn to run only a few hundred yards east of the kibbutz.

Terror attack

On Thursday, June 13, 1974, four PF-GC terrorists infiltrated the Lebanon-Israel border and invaded Kibbutz Shamir. They entered one of the buildings shooting Edna Mor (who was Pregnant) and Shoshana Galili. Edna left behind a child and husband who moved out of the kibbutz shortly after. The terrorists continued shooting at random. Judi Sinton, a volunteer from New Zealand, on her way back to the apiary after breakfast, was shot by a terrorist and killed. The members of the kibbutz seized their weapons and ran in the direction from where gun fire was heard. In the gun battle that followed all four terrorists were killed.
