Shadow World (role playing game)

Shadow World is a high-fantasy campaign setting situated on the fictional planet of Kulthea. Originally produced for the Rolemaster role-playing game system, the game setting is owned by Iron Crown Enterprises (often referred to as I.C.E.). It is currently maintained by the primary author of the setting, Terry K. Amthor of Eidolon Studio (who also holds the trademark for Shadow World, and copyrights for non-gaming fiction related to the world).

The setting blends traditional fantasy elements, such as elves, dwarves, magic, etc., with science fiction, including such elements as space and time travel, and, to a degree, futuristic technology.

Development History

The first book to be set in Shadow World was The Iron Wind adventure setting, published in 1980 as a game setting for Iron Crown Enterprises's Rolemaster fantasy game system. Iron Crown also published Vog Mur and The Cloudlords of Tanara as standalone settings before the 1989 publication of the Shadow World World Atlas First Edition placed those settings in the context of a single overarching campaign. Iron Crown went on to publish several more supplements before the rights to the property reverted to author Terry Amthor .

Shadow World (video game)

Shadow World is a 1983 video game for the Atari 8-bit family written by Mike Potter and distributed by Synapse Software.

The game is a somewhat complex shooter in which the players are in charge of defending their planet from an alien invasion. The game supported two players at once, splitting the screen vertically into two halves, but merging them on the fly when both players were in the same location.

History

Shadow World was the last in a series of games Potter wrote for Synapse in a one year period between November 1981. All of these games shared a number of features, including the use of custom character sets, high-resolution graphics modes, and smooth scrolling. They demonstrated an evolution in technique, growing more graphical complex over time, and generally becoming much faster paced.

Potter's royalties were shrinking over time, eventually reaching 80 cents a game sold. At the same time software piracy was rampant. When he saw that his own brother in law had pirated copies of all his games, he decided to leave the games market. He turned to the nascent IBM PC market, but also released a few more Atari titles with other labels.

Shadow World (novel)

Shadow World is a novel by British astronomer and writer Chris Impey that explores the boundary between narrative fiction and science fiction. The point of view of protagonist Ian McEvoy is followed in episodes spanning twenty years of his life that track his increasing dislocation and psychic dissolution. He travels voraciously and meets people who invite him into the worlds of astronomy, anthropology, and archaeology. Meanwhile, his own world is dissolving. The book was published as a paperback by Dark Skies Press and an Amazon Kindle ebook in 2013. It is the first novel of the author, who also writes in the field of popular science.

Summary

Shadow World is a novel that follows the first person perspective of a charismatic but disconnected wanderer called Ian McEvoy. McEvoy is a truth-seeker. He has moments when he sees through the surface sheen of the world to a deeper reality, but also moments when his sense of self dissolves. The Scotsman is restless and curious. He flings himself into new relationships, even as he flees family secrets. In Shadow World, we see through McEvoy’s eyes as he grows from a boisterous youth to a man defined equally by darkness and light. We meet his demons and his lovers. His adventure unfolds like beads on a string, each episode separate yet connected. His journey takes him from the Arizona desert to the wilds of Patagonia, from the Silk Road in China to the lush countryside of Ireland, ending in a twilight zone near the Arctic Circle.
