Shadow (Ashlee Simpson song)

"Shadow" is the second single by American recording artist Ashlee Simpson, taken from her debut album, Autobiography (2004). The single peaked at #57 in the United States, becoming Simpson's second Billboard Hot 100 entry; it also peaked at #31 in Australia.

Song information

"Shadow" was written by Ashlee Simpson, Kara DioGuardi and producer John Shanks. It is three minutes and fifty-seven seconds long, and is the third track on Autobiography.

The song is about feelings Simpson had (when she was about 15 or 16 years old), according to one interview of living in the shadow of the dreams and accomplishments of her famous older sister, Jessica, and finding her own identity. Although "Shadow" is noted for having somewhat dark lyrics, it concludes with a positive message, as Simpson sings that "everything's cool now" and "the past is in the past." Simpson has said that it is "about loving yourself and coming to terms with who you are"; also, in an interview on Live with Regis and Kelly on September 22, 2004, Simpson explained the song's meaning:

Surveillance

Surveillance (/sərˈv.əns/ or /sərˈvləns/) is the monitoring of the behavior, activities, or other changing information, usually of people for the purpose of influencing, managing, directing, or protecting them. This can include observation from a distance by means of electronic equipment (such as CCTV cameras), or interception of electronically transmitted information (such as Internet traffic or phone calls); and it can include simple, relatively no- or low-technology methods such as human intelligence agents and postal interception. The word surveillance comes from a French phrase for "watching over" ("sur" means "from above" and "veiller" means "to watch"), and is in contrast to more recent developments such as sousveillance.

Surveillance is used by governments for intelligence gathering, the prevention of crime, the protection of a process, person, group or object, or for the investigation of crime. It is also used by criminal organizations to plan and commit crimes such as robbery and kidnapping, by businesses to gather intelligence, and by private investigators.

Sia Furler

Sia Kate Isobelle Furler (born 18 December 1975), sometimes referred to mononymously as Sia (/ˈsə/), is an Australian singer-songwriter. She started her career as a singer in the local Adelaide acid jazz band Crisp in the mid-1990s. In 1997, when Crisp disbanded, she released her debut studio album titled OnlySee on Flavoured Records in Australia. Following the event, she moved to London, England and provided lead vocals for British duo Zero 7.

In 2000, Sia signed to Sony Music's sub-label Dance Pool and released her second studio album, Healing Is Difficult, the following year. Displeased with the promotion of the record, she signed to Go! Beat and released her third studio album, Colour the Small One, in 2004. Dissatisfied with the project's struggling to connect with a mainstream audience, Sia relocated to New York City in 2005 and began touring across the United States. Sia released her fourth and fifth studio releases, Some People Have Real Problems and We Are Born, in 2008 and 2010, respectively. In 2014, Sia released her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear, which was preceded by the top-ten single "Chandelier". On 29 January 2016, she released her seventh studio album This Is Acting.

Farman MF.11

The Maurice Farman MF.11 Shorthorn is a French aircraft developed before World War I by the Farman Aviation Works. It was used as a reconnaissance and light bomber during the early part of World War I, later being relegated to training duties.

The Maurice Farman Shorthorn was the aircraft in which Biggles, Capt W.E. Johns' fictional character, first took to the air in "Biggles Learns To Fly".

Design and development

A pusher configuration unequal-span biplane like the earlier Farman MF.7, the MF.11 differed in lacking the forward-mounted elevator, the replacement of the biplane horizontal tail surfaces with a single surface with a pair of rudders mounted above it, and the mounting of the nacelle containing crew and engine in the gap between the two wings. The aircraft was also fitted with a machine gun for the observer, whose position was changed from the rear seat to the front in order to give a clear field of fire.

Its name derived from that of the MF.7 Longhorn, as it lacked the characteristic front-mounted elevator and elongated skids of its predecessor.

My name looks unfamiliar on this barky marky sign
And the love that I've been gettin' I can't really call it mine
This blacktop ribbon winds me down an unforgivin' road
When I think about my baby on the other side of home
I say oh, oh-oh-oh, oooh, I gotta go
I say oh, oh-oh-oh, oooh
Hey, hey, hey, on my way
23 days gone by, why can't eagles fly
Hey, hey, hey, love don't break
23 nights of blue carry me back to you
Yeah
Another song gets crippled on this napkin in my lap
As we burn another circle on this god forsaken map
The droaning of the engines and the moaning of the wheels
It's a fortuneteller's melody, it's how you make me feel
I say oh, oh-oh-oh, oooh, I gotta go
I say oh, oh-oh-oh, oooh
Hey, hey, hey, on my way
23 days gone by why can't eagles fly
Hey, hey, hey ,love don't break
23 nights of blue carry me back to you
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Yeah, Albuquerque's never felt colder
One mile higher all the way to Boulder
Okalahoma City always looks pretty
'Cause it's half way home
Yeah, windshield wipers, broken white lines
Lord, don't let me loose my mind
'Cause 23 days of Tennessee time
And I'm back to you
Ooooh, oh-oh-oh, oooh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, hey, hey, on my way
23 days gone by why can't eagles fly
Hey, hey, hey, love don't break
23 nights of blue carry me back to you
Whoa-oh, whoa-ooooh
Whoa-oh, whoa-ooooh, oh
Whoa-oh, whoa-ooooh
