Shades (comics)

Shades is the name of a supervillain in Marvel Comics. He is the father of Victor Alvarez.

Publication history

Shades first appeared in Luke Cage: Hero for Hire #1 and was created by Archie Goodwin and George Tuska.

Fictional character biography

The unnamed person who grew up to become Shades was raised in Harlem. During his youth, Shades was involved with a woman named Reina Alvarez where they were together for years and had a son named Victor Alvarez.

Shades was recruited into a gang called the Rivals which also consisted of Carl Lucas, Willis Stryker, and Comanche. As a member of the Rivals, Shades engaged in a fight with a rival gang called the Diablos and many other gangs while also committing petty crimes and working for crime lord Sonny Caputo. Shades and Commanche were later arrested by the police and sentenced to Seagate Prison where they were tortured by the ruthless prison guard Albert "Billy Bob" Rackman.

After many years of abuse from Albert Rackman, Shades and Comanche escaped from Seagate Prison sometime after Albert Rackman was fired. Shades and Comanche decided that it was the opportunity to get revenge on their former tormentor. Shades and Comanche tried to get Luke Cage to help them only to learn that he has gone straight.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses or sun glasses are a form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight and high-energy visible light from damaging or discomforting the eyes. They can sometimes also function as a visual aid, as variously termed spectacles or glasses exist, featuring lenses that are colored, polarized or darkened. In the early 20th century they were also known as sun cheaters (cheaters being an American slang term for glasses).

The American Optometric Association recommends sunglasses whenever a person is in the sun. to protect the eyes from ultraviolet radiation (UV) and blue light, which can cause several serious eye problems. Its usage is mandatory immediately after some surgical procedures such as IntraLASIK and recommended for a certain time period in dusty areas, when leaving the house and in front of a TV screen or computer monitor after LASEK. Sunglasses have long been associated with celebrities and film actors primarily from a desire to mask their identity. Since the 1940s sunglasses have been popular as a fashion accessory, especially on the beach.

Shades (Andrew Hill album)

Shades is the twenty-fourth album by American jazz pianist Andrew Hill, recorded in 1986 and released on the Italian Soul Note label in 1988. The album features six of Hill's original compositions, four performed by a quartet and two by a trio.

Reception

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars calling it "Stimulating and unusual music that is difficult to classify as anything but "modern jazz"".

Shades (band)

Shades is an American contemporary R&B group that was active in the mid 1990s. The group consisted of Danielle Andrews, Tiffanie Cardwell, Monique Peoples and Shannon Walker Williams; who all met when they were students at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.

The group released their eponymous debut album in 1997 on Motown Records. The most successful single from the album was the lead single "Tell Me (I'll Be Around)", which peaked at #50 on the Billboard Hot 100.
