Sex-positive movement

The sex-positive movement is a social movement which promotes and embraces sexuality with few limits beyond an emphasis on safe sex and the importance of consent. Sex positivity is "an attitude towards human sexuality that regards all consensual sexual activities as fundamentally healthy and pleasurable, and encourages sexual pleasure and experimentation. The sex-positive movement is a social and philosophical movement that advocates these attitudes. The sex-positive movement advocates sex education and safer sex as part of its campaign." The movement generally makes no moral distinctions among types of sexual activities, regarding these choices as matters of personal preference.

Overview

The terms and concept of sex-positive (German: sexuell positiv) (or, alternately sex-affirmative (sexuell bejahend)) and sex-negative (sexuell negativ) are generally attributed to Wilhelm Reich. His hypothesis was that some societies view sexual expression as essentially good and healthy, while other societies take an overall negative view of sexuality and seek to repress and control the sex drive.

Sex Positive

Sex Positive is a 2008 documentary film directed by Daryl Wein about Richard Berkowitz. The film explores Berkowitz' life, presenting him as a revolutionary gay activist whose incomparable contribution to the invention of safe sex has never been aptly credited.

The documentary had footages from Berkowitz, as well as Don Adler, Dotty Berkowitz (his mother), Susan Brown, Demetre Daskalakis, Richard Dworkin, William A. Haseltine, Larry Kramer, Ardele Lister, Michael Lucas, Francisco Roque, Gabriel Rotello, Joseph Sonnabend, Bill Stackhouse, Krishna Stone, Sean Strub and Edmund White.

In 2008, the film won the Grand Jury Award at the Los Angeles Outfest for "Best Documentary Feature".
