Setting (narrative)

In works of narrative (especially fictional), the literary element setting includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes place, and helps initiate the main backdrop and mood for a story. Setting has been referred to as story world or milieu to include a context (especially society) beyond the immediate surroundings of the story. Elements of setting may include culture, historical period, geography, and hour. Along with the plot, character, theme, and style, setting is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction. and novelist Donna Levin has described how this social milieu shapes the characters’ values. The elements of the story setting include the passage of time, which may be static in some stories or dynamic in others with, for example, changing seasons.

Types of settings

Settings may take various forms:

  • Alternate history
  • Campaign setting
  • Constructed world
  • Dystopia
  • Fantasy world
  • Fictional city
  • Fictional country
  • Fictional crossover
  • Musical setting

A musical setting is a musical composition that is written on the basis of a literary work. The literary work is said to be set, or adapated, to music. Musical settings include choral music and other vocal music. A musical setting is made to particular words, such as poems. By contrast, a musical arrangement is a musical reconceptualization of a previously composed work, rather than a brand new piece of music. An arrangement often refers to a change in medium or style and can be instrumental, not necessarily vocal music.

Texts commonly used in choral settings include the mass and the requiem in Western Christianity, and the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and the All-night vigil in Eastern Christianity. Examples include Mozart's Great Mass, and Leontovych's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

A poem that has been set to music is known as an art song or Lied (German variant). Composers known for their art songs include Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann.

    Tuesday Afternoon

    by: Stonecake

Darling, you're lost but I know that you soon will be found
in yourself and then you'll go your own way
I hope that I always will stand by your side
when your dazed and confused 'bout what your mind will say
Your mind and soul talks to me
Look at the world, all those people around,
what on earth have they found that make them keep going on?
Don't dig to deep, you hit stones that punch holes
in your innocent soul, now look what you have found
It's Tuesday Afternoon and the sun has been
    shining on the world today
All those people passin' me by outside,
they won't hide their love away
Darling, it's time to wake up,
you should listen to what the unprecious
    little songbird sings
Take care of that sound, put it into your head
That's how you feed up your soul,
    you can begin with this
It's Tuesday Afternoon and the sun has been
    shining on the world today
All those people passin' me by outside,
they won't hide their love away
    Tuesday Afternoon
    Shining on the world
All those people passin me by outside,
they won't hide their love away
It's Tuesday Afternoon and the sun has been
    shining on the world today
All those people passin' me by outside,
they won't hide their love away
    Tuesday Afternoon
    Shining on the world
All those people passin' me by outside,
