Sestos (Greek: Σηστός) was an ancient Greek town of the Thracian Chersonese,[1] the modern Gallipoli peninsula in European Turkey. Situated on the Hellespont opposite Abydos, it was the home of Hero in the legend of Hero and Leander, where according to legend she lived in a tower overlooking the sea. Sestos was an Aeolian colony, as it was founded by settlers from Lesbos. The ruins of the town are near to the modern settlement of Eceabat.
In 480 BC, Xerxes' army crossed at this point on two temporary pontoon bridges later known as Xerxes' Pontoon Bridges, and most of Alexander the Great's forces went the other way here by boat in 334 BC.
In 1810 Lord Byron swam from Sestos to Abydos in four hours, recreating Leander's feat. This event is commemorated every year with an annual swim event that recreates the crossing.[2]
Little now remains of the ancient town of Sestos.
Sestos is central to Christopher Marlowe's poem Hero and Leander, and is referred to in its opening lines: <poem> On Hellespont, guilty of true love's blood, In view and opposite two cities stood, Sea-borderers, disjoin'd by Neptune's might: The one Abydos, the other Sestos hight. At Sestos Hero dwelt; Hero the fair, Whom young Apollo courted for her hair. </poem> (hight means 'was called')
In 479BC-478BC, after the Greek victories (against Persia) at Plataea and Mycale, Greek forces under the command of Xanthippus besieged and defeated the Persian garrison at Sestos allowing the Greeks to conquer the city. As a result, Persian influence along the Hellespont was significantly reduced. This served the dual goal of denying Persian land forces access to the Greek mainland, while restoring Athenian trade to Black Sea ports such as Byzantium.

I admit to cry and scream
Can't this merely be a dream
Didn't believe what they say
But now we're seperated by death
Our characters the same
One's fault the other's blame
Now that you're gone and I'm alone
It's pale where the sun once shone
All the things that we have been through
Sorrow and joy I gave you
Living by each other's strength
I knew you, you knew the me
It all happened way too fast
I can't accept this ain't no end
You must be hiding somewhere
No please God this ain't fair
Why me?
I'm being swallowed by these questions
Why me?
Shivers down my spine
Why me?
I'm being punished for no reason
Why me?
Lost in misery
There are things you can't control
Before you know it claims you whole
Letting go might seem the worst part
Think again when grief's tearing you apart
Try remembering the good things
Still submit yourself to sadness
Because he who pushes all away
Severely suffers every day
Why me?
I'm being swallowed by these questions
Why me?
Shivers down my spine
Why me?
I'm being punished for no reason
Why me?
Lost in misery
All shaken I awake
The nightmares in my sleep
Dreams of you I cannot rest
Scared of the person I knew best
Cold and left behind
The one I loved ain't here tonight
I'll pay for a visit therefore instead
I feel relieved facing my own death
Why me?
I'm being swallowed by these questions
Why me?
Shivers down my spine
Why me?
I'm being punished for no reason
Why me?
