Serenity (soundtrack)

The soundtrack to the 2005 motion picture Serenity was released on September 27, 2005. The film's score was composed by David Newman, and performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony under Newman's direction. According to director Joss Whedon's sleeve notes for the album, Newman was recommended by Universal's music executives when he requested a musician capable of "everything." It is of note that the acoustic guitar version of the Ballad of Serenity, which was used at the end of the film's credits, is absent from the soundtrack.

Serenity is a double album by Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson recorded in 1999 and released on the ECM label.

Reception

The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested Core Collection. The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4½ stars stating "Simply put, there are no records like the Stenson Trio's Serenity. The band has outdone themselves by their slow, careful development over three records and has become one of the premier rhythm trios on the planet. Serenity is not only the group's coup de grace, but also a jazz masterpiece of the highest order". The JazzTimes review by Stuart Nicholson stated "Here, Stenson emerges as an original voice within jazz, which in these renascent times is cause enough for celebration".

Distant Thunder (marching band)

Distant Thunder were a marching brass and percussion band (and latterly a drum corps) who competed in BYBA (British Youth Band Association) and Drum Corps Europe. They were based in Sharnbrook Upper School.

The Corps have since merged with Equinox Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010 to form Nexus Drum & Bugle Corps.

History

The band was originally formed in 1981 as Bedford and Kempston E flat drum and trumpet corps. In 1986, they were renamed the Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps before disbanding in 1999.

The corps then reformed as Distant Thunder Show Corps in 1999 by John Dimmick, Paul Bishop and Richard Harding.

Re-entering BYBA in Junior Class in the 2000 season, they grew in size and skill each season, winning DCE A-Class in 2004 and BYBA Division 2 in 2005. Moving to the highest class, Division 1, in 2006 the corps re-branded as a drum and bugle corps once again.

Merge with Equinox

In January 2010, the corps merged with Equinox Drum and Bugle Corps of Biggleswade to form Nexus Drum & Bugle Corps.

Phoenix (Chinese astronomy)

The modern constellation Phoenix lies across one of the quadrants symbolized by the White Tiger of the West (西方白虎, Xī Fāng Bái Hǔ), and The Southern Asterisms (近南極星區, Jìnnánjíxīngōu), that divide the sky in traditional Chinese uranography.

According to the quadrant, constellation Phoenix in Chinese sky is not fully seen. Ankaa (Alpha Phoenicis) are bright stars in this constellation that possibly never seen in Chinese sky.

The name of the western constellation in modern Chinese is 鳳凰座 (fèng huáng zuò), which means "the phoenix constellation".

Phoenix (1792)

Phoenix was a ship involved in the maritime fur trade of the Pacific during the late 18th century.

Her captain was Hugh Moore, and her home port was Bombay. She is known to have visited the Pacific Northwest in 1792, and to have wintered in the Columbia River in 1794. Phoenix visited a prominent Haida village on Langara Island in 1792. As historian F. Howay recounted:

Sailing south to Alta California during March 1795, Phoenix traded for sea otter furs in Santa Barbara before visiting the Kingdom of Hawaii and later the Qing port of Guangzhou.William Marsden later employed the ship to collect several nutmeg and cloves for agricultural efforts in Sumatra. Phoenix delivered the cargo in July 1798 "a complete success."

Phoenix was the namesake of the Russian-American Company brig Phoenix, the first vessel built in Russian America by Alexandr Baranov.
